Participants 16 or older can complete the firearms hunter safety course online at hunter-ed.com/maine and will be provided a voucher upon completion of the online exam to purchase a firearms hunting license. The cost $19.95
Youth are not required to have a firearms certificate to hunt with an adult. You may obtain a permit at city hall for $8 to register to hunt with an adult.
Students 10-15 years of age can complete the firearms hunter safety course online at hunter-ed.com/maine and will be provided a voucher upon completion of the online exam to then attend the required skills and exam day. In the skills and exam session students must demonstrate to the instructor that they can safely handle a firearm, participate in activities, bring in a survival kit with appropriate contents and pass a 50-question test with a grade of at least 70%. Students must complete the online course and provide voucher number to register for the Skills and Exam Day. Students must also bring the voucher to the first class.
To be eligible to purchase a crossbow hunting permit, any person (16 years of age and older) must provide satisfactory evidence of the following: successful completion of an archery hunting education program or a firearms hunter safety course AND successful completion of a crossbow hunting education program (there is no set order in which the courses must be taken) OR proof of having previously held any valid hunting license and a valid permit or license that authorized the use of a crossbow (that is not a junior hunting license or an apprenticeship hunter license).
The crossbow course takes approximately 3 hours and requires that students complete the knowledge portion of the course online and pass a test with a grade of at least 80%. The fee for the online course is $30.00. Please visit crossbow-ed.com/maine to complete the online course. Once students complete the online course, they will receive a digital certificate, which includes a certificate number that can be used to purchase a crossbow permit online or from a licensing agent.
