If you are planning a mountain vacation in 4-6 weeks – TAKE THIS CLASS NOW! You’ll progress through 10 exercises that will gradually help your body adapt to the higher altitude while still at home at sea level. Changes include an increase in red blood cells, giving your blood more oxygen carrying capacity prior to your vacation. You will learn a more functional breathing pattern that gives greater tissue oxygenation and less shortness of breath. Using the new, more optimal breathing pattern, will allow you to maintain a higher oxygen level and ease of breathing while on vacation. This two hour course is an on-demand, on-line, anytime, self-directed course! The link will be provided to you upon course registration. No student limit.

The trip leaves Wells High School at 8:00a.m. we arrive at the Museum by 10:30.  Because of covid there are no docents available you will be free to explore the museum on your own. You will not want to miss the new Turner exhibit. There are two places in the museum that you can dine at. The van will leave the museum at 1:30p.m. to return to the High School. The trip is limited to 10 people. The cost of the trip is $55.00 per person.

This course helps beginners develop basic proficiencies in all four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Class time will be devoted to reading dialogues, pair work, small-and large-group discussions, written and oral practice of structure and vocabulary, and use of internet resources.  We will use the french TAXI curriculum which includes a text and a workbook. Both are very useful and a link to an order site is available in our online catalog. Alternatively, we can send you a pdf of the text

Throughout the eight weeks students will learn:

  1. To greet someone, ask and say your name, identify a person
  2. Approach someone, ask age, address and phone number
  3. Talk about one's tastes
  4. Naming, showing and locating objects
  5. Express possession, indicate colors
  6. Characterize an object, ask for the price, express your tastes
  7. Showing and locating people
  8. Ask your way, indicate a direction, indicate a means of transport 

This class is live online using ZOOM.

France Hilbert has taught classes at College of the Atlantic since 2018. She is a professional artist and art educator with an extensive resume of training and experience including major commissions and installations. Her artistic education began at the age of seven, when she was taught by her grandfather, the late artist, Jaro Hilbert. From him, she received a thorough education in the classical tradition. She pursued her formal education at the National Fine Art Academy of Paris, France, (ENSBA), was an artist in residence in Copenhagen, studied German Expressionism in Berlin, and traveled extensively to paint and study around Europe and abroad. At the Art Students League of New York she received a Merit Scholarship to master portraiture in painting and completed a Certificate in Sculpture. She was selected for “Model to Monument”, a sculpture program at The Academy of Art, Newington Cropsey Foundation, Hastings on Hudson, N.Y. and received an Edward G. Mc Dowell Travel Grant from the Art Students League of New York. Of her many public and private commissions; some are permanent installations. “Talma”, a 7-foot bronze sculpture is installed in the public square of the Theatre of the Valley of L’Yerres, in Brunoy, France. A pair of 4-foot bronze relief sculptures entitled ”The Calling” are installed at the Georgetown University Medical School building in Washington DC.

Spanish for Beginners

This course is designed as a hands-on, conversation-oriented Spanish enrichment class with emphasis on conversational Spanish.  Learn basic and common phrases used in travel situations, such as registering at a hotel, asking directions, ordering food at restaurants, bartering for souvenirs, as well as useful phrases for airports, train stations, buses and taxis.

The course will cover grammar, vocabulary and the most commonly used verbs in Spanish. A great option for folks preparing for a trip to a Spanish speaking country or for people wanting to connect with Spanish speaking neighbors or customers! 

We will use the book Easy Spanish Step-by-Step by Barbara Bregstein (new or used copies may be purchased on Amazon).  This is an in-person class.

Gilda Garcia is a native of Guatemala and has extensive experience in human resources and training.  Upon arriving in the US, she began tutoring and realized she was passionate about sharing her language.

Have you ever considered learning to fly? Job forecasts predict a significant pilot shortage in the next decade. This could be your first step toward a lucrative career or simply personal enjoyment. Certified flight instructor Jonathan Ward from Penobscot Island Air (PIA) will provide classroom instruction to assist students in passing the FAA written exam, one major step toward certification as a private pilot. In addition to learning FAA regulatory expectations, you’ll learn aerodynamics, aircraft systems, flight controls, weather, navigation, aeromedical factors, airspace, control tower operations, as well as other essential aspects. There is NO requirement for previous aviation knowledge in order to take this class, however, students must be age 16 or above. Please note that this is a classroom-only program. Significant study is required outside of classtime to successfully prepare for the FAA written exam.You may choose to enroll in flight training for an additional cost. A short supply list is provided upon enrollment.
