Dog Training: Manners I Section B

Calendar Jan 23, 2020 at 5 pm, runs for 6 weeks

Tired of feeling like you’re at the other end of a dog sled team? Want to be able to take your dog to the farmers market without them jumping all over everyone? Need to figure out how to get your dog to come when you really need him to? Manners 1 is the class for you! For dogs 4 months and older, this class will help you and your dog work as a team to conquer the big struggles of having an adolescent dog. We'll use positive reinforcement to practice coming when called, polite greetings (not jumping), leash walking, sit/down/stand, stay, mat training and attention training. This class is for non-reactive dogs only. First class is people only, no dogs please.

These classes will be held at Somesville Fire Dept (1157 Main St., Mt. Desert). To accommodate the demand, Manners 1 will be offered multiple times/dates so please pay attention which section you register for.

 

All classes will be taught by Whitney Thurston, CPDT-KA of Salty Dog Obedience and Adventure. Each class runs 6 weeks for 50 minutes. Her goal and passion is to help other dog lovers learn how to effectively communicate with their dogs, to help them build lasting relationships.

About Boating Safely

with USCG Auxiliary, Mt. Desert Island Adult & Community Education

Calendar Jan 23, 2020 at 6 pm, runs for 8 weeks

This team taught, 8 hours U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary course provides recreational boaters with the knowledge and skills to boat safely on either inland or coastal waters. General topics include in this ABS course are: boating operations, boat handling, boating laws and regulations, water traffic patterns, equipment requirements, and introductory navigation. Students will complete a multiple-choice exam at the conclusion of the course. Participants who pass the written exam are awarded a USCGA certificate that may be used to satisfy state boat operator certification as well as possibly earning a discount on insurance premiums from many marine insurers. This course is approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA).

There will be no class on February 20.

Also, as part of this ABS course there will be two additional sessions for more detailed navigation. These sessions will be optional for ABS course attendees.

Dog Training: Canine Good Citizen

The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program is designed to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. This program stresses responsible dog ownership for owners and training and good manners for dogs.  All dogs who pass the 10 step CGC test may receive a certificate and their first official title from the AKC. The class will prepare you to take the (optional) test at the end. Manners 1 & 2 required for entrance to class (or by instructor approval.)

Preschool Playgroup I

Let’s play! Join us as we read, sing, and play together with your preschool children. Learn activities which will help prepare your child for school success. Social skills play an important part in preparing for “big” school. Your child will practice these skills while playing in a learning environment. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Please notify us of any allergies as we ask all parents to bring a snack for their child. No classes 2/17, 4/20.

Evening Indoor Walking Program

Calendar Jan 27, 2020 at 3 pm, runs for 17 weeks

Are you looking for a dry, safe, and well-lit place to walk? Join us for a healthy way to keep fit. A walking clinic will kick off the program providing information on techniques, proper stretching, goal setting, and record keeping. Information night for new participants is Monday, 1/27, 5:30 - 6:30 PM in the high school cafeteria. No need to attend if you have previously participated in the walking program. Families are welcome to walk from 3:00 - 6:00 PM after the intro night. The nominal fee covers the entire semester! Kids are free. No access 2/17 thru 2/20, 4/20 thru 4/23, 5/25.

Yoga

Give yourself the gift of a one hour and 15 minute Yoga practice to calm your mind while stretching and strengthening your body! After warming up, we will practice seated and standing postures, bends, twists, balancing postures and inversions. Poses can be modified for different levels of flexibility and experience. Martha is a Certified Yoga Instructor. Please dress comfortably in clothing that allows you to stretch; bring water, a blanket and a mat if you have one. Mondays, January 27 through May 18, 6:15 – 7:30pm. Registration: $100. Walk-ins are welcome at $8 per class.

Dance: A Taste of Ballroom

Learn the Basics – just enough to get you on the dance floor. We’ll a little of everything: Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Swing, Cha Cha, Rhumba, Salsa, Charleston……all steps are very learnable!

Dance shoes and a partner are strongly suggested.

No dance experience required. No class on Feb. 18 or March 3.
