A Walk Through Time and Nature Along Maine's Appalachian Trail

Dave Field, Overseer of Lands for the Maine Appalachian Trail Club and Trail worker in Maine for 64 years will tell the amazing story of how the Appalachian Trail was scouted and built through Maine from 1925-1937, why and how more than half of the original Trail was relocated from 1970-1990, and the 40-year challenge of finding protection for the surroundings of the Trail. All of this will be illustrated with a walk, south to north, that emphasizes the beauty of the Trail and the plants, animals and geography along the path.

Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads you travel every day. Brush up on your driving skills, and learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. The class is geared for students 50+ and is taught by an AARP trained volunteer. A break is scheduled for a brown bag lunch. Participants who successfully complete the course are eligible for a reduction in automobile insurance premiums. Free online registration, and then pay instructor at the class. Cost is $16.00 for AARP members with cards and $21.00 for non-members Cash/Check ONLY. Please make checks payable to AARP.

Topics covered include types of boats, trailering, required safety equipment, legal requirements, navigating waterways, safe operation, boating emergencies, and water sports. The course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). Successful completion of an optional exam at the end of the class leads to a certificate that can be used to show you have taken a boating course. The certificate is required to operate a boat in most states and Canada. Many boat insurance companies offer discounts on boating insurance to those who have a certificate.

American Mah Jongg is an ancient Chinese game similar to Gin Rummy. It’s a social game suitable for people of all ages, popular across the United States, and attracts a fast-growing community here in southern Maine. In a supportive atmosphere, learn to recognize the tiles, understand how the Mah Jongg card is organized, exchange tiles - better known as the Charleston - and learn how to set up your hand. Use the tiles along with the National Mah Jongg League’s annual card to put together winning hands. Must pre-purchase official 2019 American Mah Jongg card from

www.nationalmahjonggleague.org and bring to first class.  Be willing to learn, have lots of fun, and meet new people. Sharon is a social worker with a private practice in Portland. She’s been enthusiastically playing and teaching Mah Jongg for many years and enjoys spreading its joys! Hiromi is a retired paralegal who has played and helped teach for many years.
