Music and Emotion

Have you ever deliberated over what music to put on when you have friends over? What songs do you reach for to console a heartache, give voice to anger, or quiet an overactive mind? In Music & Emotion, we’ll explore emotional granularity through the lens of the music you love. By the end of the course you’ll have your own personalized map for navigating emotion with music. There will be no class on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Vocal All State Prep with Josh Lund

Ages: 13 - 18
Students entering grades 9-12 in the fall 2024 who want to audition for the KV and/or all state festival will prepare the Italian Aria and Madrigal under the guidance of Music Educator Josh Lund.
Two separate class times are offered. Students will indicate upon registration which class time is appropriate for them.
- Sopranos and Tenors: 6:00pm - 7:00pm
- Altos and Basses: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Both classes will meet for 6 sessions; there is no class on Wednesday, July 3. For students who are 14-15 years old: A parent/guardian must remain on-site for the duration of the class.

Instant Guitar for Hopelessly Busy People
with Craig Coffman, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education
In just a few hours you can learn enough about playing the guitar to give you years of musical enjoyment, and you won’t have to take private lessons to do it. This crash course will teach you some basic chords and get you playing along with your favorite songs right away. Fee includes the online book, online follow up lessons, a recording of the class and also an optional periodic question and answer session. Class is held online using zoom and is partly hands on instruction and partly lecture/demonstration. For ages 13+. *This course includes ONE live online session, and students follow up on their own with provided video lessons.
Taiko (Japanese Drumming) Class
with Brendan Wilson, Mid-Maine Regional Adult Community Education
Highly energetic and athletic fun with drums and Japanese culture! Drums and drumsticks will be provided for classes. Optional extra $10 fee to buy your own drumsticks payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Limit 10 students. No experience necessary. For ages 11 and up.

Advanced Rock Band

Pre-requisite to sign up for class: 3 years of experience playing and performing bar chords. Students who are 15 and under must have a parent/guardian remain on-site during the class. There will be no class on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Ear Training, Theory, & Basic Composition
with Jonathan Hatch, Mid-Maine Regional Adult Community Education
Develop essential musical skills through ear-training, theory, and basic composition exercises in this 6-session course. Improve pitch recognition, rhythmic dictation, and sight-singing abilities. Study harmonic progressions and melodic construction. Apply concepts by creating simple musical compositions. Perfect for musicians seeking to strengthen fundamentals. This class is geared for students aged 14 and above.

Intermediate Ukulele Ensemble
with Jo Hampton, Mid-Maine Regional Adult Community Education
Explore a variety of genres and techniques in this ensemble for ukulele players with prior experience. Students who have taken Beginner Ukulele or private lessons with Jo Hampton are recommended for this ensemble, as well as any ukulele players with a beginner's understanding of simple chords (C, F, Am, G). Students will explore a variety of chord progressions for popular music, fingerstyle melodies, and improvisation, and strengthen a variety of techniques. Limit 10 students.

Woodwind Chamber Music

Gather with Wendy to learn woodwind chamber music, chamber music is fun and helps to develop ensemble skills, musical sensitivity, and a deeper understanding of performance. All levels are welcome!
