Pine Needle Baskets

White pine, Maine’s state flower, and Red pine, are ubiquitous throughout the state and provide a vital pool of resources for human and nonhuman Mainers alike. Pine needles are beautiful and strong! They can be coiled and sewn together to make hats, lovely usable baskets, and/or adorably tiny ones. Learn to identify, regeneratively gather and harvest, properly store and process, and weave with pine needles. We'll cover the basics of coiled basketry, which is a global, ancient human skill, and create a wonderful pine-needle basket.

Soup’s on Me - Spoon Carving and Gourd Bowl Spring 2024 - May Session

In this exciting and hands-on class, students will have the unique opportunity to unleash their creativity by carving their very own wooden spoon and crafting a beautiful gourd bowl. Not only will participants learn the art of carving, but they will also have the option to personalize their creations with stunning paint designs or experiment with the intricate technique of woodburning. To facilitate the woodburning process, a wide variety of stencils will be readily available, allowing students to add an extra touch of artistry to their bowls. As the class comes to a close, we will gather together to savor a delicious group meal, where we will proudly enjoy hearty soups and crusty bread served with our newly crafted spoons and bowls. And the best part? The nourishing and comforting meal is on me, a delightful way to celebrate our accomplishments in this incredible class!
All classes are taught by instructor, Jessica Steele and all materials are included. Registration and payment are required to hold your spot in class. Space is limited! Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance to receive a refund. If our Adult Ed office or instructor cancel class, refunds will be issued to students.

Enamel earrings

This course on enamel earrings is a quick intro to enameling. Will will discuss sifting and wet laying the enamel on the metal. Enamel is powdered glass that is heated with a kiln or a torch to achieve a beautiful color. Each student will learn how to cut and form the metal to create the shapes. Students will also learn how to use rivets or other cold connections to attach pieces of metal to each other. We will explore multiple ways of designing an ear wire to complete the pieces.This is class is open to all skill levels, there will be demonstrations, and plenty of work time.

A Walk Through Black Point Cemetery
with Ron Romano, Scarborough Adult Education
Black Point Cemetery has roots back to Scarborough's earliest days. Hand-carved gravemarkers from the late 1700s and early 1800s have survived, some of which were imported from Boston but others that were created in the shop that stonecutter Bartlett Adams opened in Portland in 1800. Thisone hour tour through the old section will focus on colonial burial practices, stone types, and the iconography found on the gravemarkers of some of Scarborough's founding families. Both walks take place onsite at Black Point Cemetery, at the corner of 7th Avenue and Black Point Road in Scarborough. Maximum of 20 participants per walk.
