In this program, children learn foundational science and find out how STEM is at work in the world around them! They learn about the animal kingdom, both on land and under the sea. They make mixtures and explore the science of motion and energy. They also discover the technology that powers our modern world. Classes: All About Animals, Energy Burst, Get Connected, Life in the Sea, Mix It Up, Moving Motion, Radical Robots, Super Power Sources. Program runs weekly on Fridays. *No Class: 4/19.

If you have wanted to start making sourdough but didn't know where to start, or if you almost started but got overwhelmed with the process, come join me for a Sourdough Beginners class!

This two part class will allow you to bake a sourdough boule from start to finish as well as learning how to feed and maintain your starter.  You will be leaving with an established starter and your sourdough boule, along with a packet with the boule recipe we will be using, discard recipes, and helpful tips and tricks.

*We will be learning how to bake the loaf open-bake, but we will discuss baking in a dutch oven during class as this is the ideal method*

Please arrive 15 minutes before your train is due to depart, and plan your own activities for the day. Build a Shaker Style Table

This class will cover building a small end table that is 30” high, and 16” square. The course is for beginner to experienced woodworkers. The student will make all components of the table using both power tools and hand tools. The project will include most of the procedures required in Basic Woodworking, including: tapering table legs, gluing up panels, cutting multiple parts and making mortise and tenon joints. All tools, safety glasses and hearing protection provided. A materials fee will be charged based on which type of wood the student chooses upon registration; Poplar (best if the project is to be painted) $100; or Oak - $150. Students will use the SawStop table saw that has the revolutionary new braking system which eliminates the chance of injuries from the blade. Because of this, a $50 refundable deposit will be required. The materials fee and refundable deposit are payable to the instructor the first day of class.

Instructor Rick Gallion has been a professional woodworker for over thirty years and has taught many students the craft of woodworking. His shop is designed as a teaching facility.

So you want to learn how to make your vegetable or flower garden easier to manage and more bountiful at the same time? Raised bed gardening is the answer. During this class we will discuss all the specifics including site location, assembling and setup of bed and what kind of soil you need and how much. We'll dig in and prepare and plant a raised bed.and discuss the care of the garden including proper watering, the use of soil amendments and crop protection. We know that turning a confused gardener into a confident on is only a class away.

Classes held at Josias River Farm (171 Logging Rd, Cape Neddick, ME).

Gnocchi/Kopytka (Potato Dumplings)

Learn how to make one of Poland's traditional dumplings from scratch. Similar to Italian gnocchi, we start with leftover mashed potatoes, incorporate our other ingredients, cook them and then learn how to finish the dish off to perfection. Sue will share her tips and tricks as we roll, form, cook, serve, and eat these tasty morsels of comfort food. Careful! These are addictively delicious.

Please bring containers to take home what we create.

Sue learned to cook authentic recipes by taking notes while her mother and aunts cooked. Sue loves to cook and share recipes, techniques, and best practices.

Invasive Bittersweet: Bird Feeder

Frustrating to gardeners and arborists, and not readily favored by birds, Asiatic bittersweet is a largely useless bane on wild land. We can use traditional harvesting techniques to tend Asian bittersweet in the wild: harvesting material for baskets while controlling and suppressing future damaging growth. Learn to make a beautiful woven window feeder for birds! We'll cover identification, responsible collection, materials processing and storage, and creation, including the basics of stake-and-strand waling and randing weaves. The bird feeder that we will make is designed to be attached to a window. Suction cups for the bird feeder, along with all required tools and materials, will be provided.

"If my story were ever to be written truthfully from start to finish, it would amaze everyone". This quote is from Henri Matisse who was a painter, sculptor and printmaker. In this "hands on class", we'll  be learning how Matisse created his artwork, specifically focusing on his cut paper collages he created later in his life. We'll be creating a cut paper collage using  all  sorts of paper and maybe even a little fabric so bring in any goodies like this you may have at home to incorporate into your piece.  This is an art history class that will keep you moving as you learn about this amazing artist.
