Wandering Watercolors
with Russel Whitten, Old Orchard Beach/Saco Adult Education

Join other beginning and advanced students on outings to enjoy watercolor painting and build friendships with other artists. Learn to manipulate watercolor media and tonal drawing to recreate the appearance of nature with an awareness of forms and their surrounding elements. Our basis will be the study of perspective, composition, value, and color. Class location will be discussed weekly.
Prerequisite: Watercolor Basics.
Bring 1 small tube each of cadmium yellow (light), cobalt blue, and alizarin crimson; 1 paint palette (Russel says folding ones are ideal!); 1 round #10 watercolor brush; 1 inch-wide flat brush; 1 drawing pencil #2H; 1 eraser; 1 light board or piece of cardboard or portable watercolor easel; a lidded jar of water; two sheets of Arches watercolor paper, 140 lb. cold press, (optional) folding chair (approx. $80).
Note: Please purchase Arches, as the quality of watercolor paper is essential for handling the techniques you will be taught in class. Please bring any colors you already have.
Russel Whitten, a local artist and teacher, studied at The Art Students League of New York and Heartwood College of Art and is a member of The Ogunquit Art Association/Barn Gallery. Students adore his laid-back, encouraging demeanor.

Zines are easy to make copies of, so by evening's end you'll have your original template and a stack of zines to distribute to friends, family, and the world!
This class will be $20, all materials included. Ages 10 and up welcome!

How to Have Fun in a Civil War
with Merrymeeting Staff, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education

Somali American playwright and performance artist, Ifrah Mansour, revisits her childhood memories during the 1991 Somali civil war to confront violent history with humor and provide a voice for the global refugee stories of children. How to Have Fun in a Civil War, is a one-act multimedia play, that explores war from an idyllic viewpoint of a seven-year-old Somali refugee girl. The play weaves puppetry, poetry, videos, and multiple oral stories taken from community interviews to tell a captivating story about resilience while pushing the audience to engage in a healing process that is still raw for survivors of the war. Toured in multiple states, the play has been instrumental in humanizing the invisible strength of global refugees and vulnerable communities on the resilience it takes to start all over in life in a new country and to build kind caring communities.
Ifrah Mansour is a Somali, refugee, Muslim, multimedia artist, and educator residing in Minnesota. Her artwork explores trauma through the eyes of children to uncover the resiliencies of blacks, Muslims, and refugees. She interweaves poetry, puppetry, films, and installations. She's been featured in BBC, Vice, Okayafrica, Star Tribune, and City Pages. Her critically-acclaimed, “How to Have Fun in a Civil War” premiered at Guthrie Theatre and is touring to greater cities in Minnesota. Her first national museum exhibition; “Can I Touch It” premiered at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Her visual poem, “I am a Refugee” is part of PBS’s online Film festival. "My Aqal, banned and blessed" is on view at Queens Museum. Her latest work is a tiny-house-sized Indigenous hut built, a “healing Hut” hosting conversations on healing and community repair within Minnesota.

New England Aquarium WITH Duck Tour

Join us for a fun day in Boston starting with a visit to the New England Aquarium! There you can experience exhibits such as the Indo-Pacific Coral Reef, the Atlantic Harbor Seals, the Giant Ocean Tank, Olympic Coast, and more! Don’t forget to visit the gift shop!When planning your visit, check out the website: www.neaq.org to see additional things to do, such as the Simons Theatre. The theater is newly renovated, so you’ll enjoy comfortable, high-backed seats while watching films on a giant projection screen that is more than six stories high! Daily films include - Secrets of the Sea 3D, Incredible Predators 3D, Superpower Dogs 3D, and Cephalopods: Aliens of the Deep. The movies are between 45 and 49 minutes long. You must purchase tickets on your own for these films. This can be done ahead of time on their website and is strongly encouraged.You can also book your own Animal Encounters online, such as Meet and Greet: Atlantic Harbor Seals, Make Art with Atlantic Harbor Seals and you can also have Virtual Animal Encounters. Check out the website for more information.There are a number of food choices on site and nearby. The Harbor View Cafe’ is located on Level 2 at the Aquarium. DUCK TOUR 2pm at NE AquariumRight from the Aquarium, we’ll hop aboard Boston Duck Tours and enjoy a fully narrated and guided, historic tour of Boston in a “DUCK", a W.W.II style amphibious landing vehicle that travels on land and water. We'll be greeted by one of their legendary ConDUCKtors, who'll be narrating the tour. Cruise by all the places that make Boston the birthplace of freedom and a city of firsts, from the golden domed state House to the Boston Common, the historic North End to fashionable Newbury Street, Quincy Market to the Prudential Tower, and more. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, it’s time for a Big Splash as your ConDUCKtor drives the DUCK right into the Charles River for a breathtaking view of the Boston and Cambridge skylines.If you trek out on an adventure, you must make your way back to the Aquarium to catch the bus back home! Using Your Map & Compass Outside
with Alice Bean Andrenyak, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education

During the morning we’ll focus on the basics of reading a topo map, finding our location, and creating bearings using our topo maps, then we’ll take a break for lunch. In the afternoon we’ll be outside practicing how to follow and set bearings and then navigation tricks of the trade. A compass never runs out of batteries or fails to connect with a satellite.
