Considering a career change? Need assistance going back to college, but not sure where to start? Have you recently lost your job and don’t know what support services are available to you? Federal law provides access for free career training and support services for adults and youth to overcome barriers to employment. Set up an appointment with our Adult Ed team and let us help you navigate the murky waters of adult transitions. Meet our staff here.

Alice Haiss of Skowhegan worked as an adult education teacher for many years as part of the Somerset County Basic Skills Program.  She was a literacy, basic skills, GED Preparation and English as a Second Language teacher at the program's Learning Center.  She also taught GED Preparation, basic and life skills at the Somerset County Jail for years.  During that period, she took part in a federal grant project called the Esteem Machine that combined the teaching of life skills with academic skills.

Haiss also worked for Educational Skills, Inc., where she facilitated Project Resiliency, and intervention program to prevent female juvenile offenders from being incarcerated at a youth correctional center.  The program focused on the development of problem solving, communication, team-building, and self-esteem building.

This scholarship will benefit any adult education learner who are pursuing education or training in high demand, high skill, or high wage occupations.

Awards will be announced yearly at the Adult Education Graduation in June.

College and Career Access Services

Gray-New Gloucester Adult & Community Education is happy to provide continuing college and career services to graduating seniors this summer through our Maine College and Career Access grant.

We are prepared to help graduating seniors with all aspects of planning for the future, from career exploration and researching training programs to college applications and academic support. We are also able to provide remote Accuplacer testing at no cost, from the comfort of your home.

Financial Aid Workshop

The Financial Aid Workshop will provide an overview of the financial aid process and the completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Discussion will include a review of federal, state, school-based, and private funding sources. Creation of the FSA ID will be covered. Student loan management and searching for scholarships are also discussed. Please bring a copy of your 2018 federal tax return (if applicable) to aid with the filing of your FAFSA if you hope to start college in January 2021. Please bring a copy of your 2019 federal tax return (if applicable) to aid with the filing of your FAFSA if you hope to start college in the fall of 2021. Due to grant constraints, participants must be adults hoping to enter post-secondary education.

Fee: The class is FREE but pre-registration is REQUIRED

HiSET Academy - Online HiSET Preparation

Gray-New Gloucester Adult & Community Education also offers students the opportunity to work at home, at your own pace with HiSET Academy. Students can work on reading, writing, science, social studies and math to improve their skills. Using a combination of Zoom for direct instruction and HiSET Academy, students can prepare for all 5 subjects in the comfort of their own home. This option is available to students working toward a high school credential and/ or preparing for college. Students must complete the enrollment process to be eligible for these courses.
