Enter the 'Wayback Machine' to explore ancient societies around the globe from prehistory to 1500 C.E. with this engaging lecture course that shows how the past affects the present. History does repeat itself!

Open to novices and intermediate students alike, this class will meet you at your skill level. Projects range from observational (still life, portrait, etc.) to experimental, with particular focus on understanding paint mixing to achieve the colors you see. Bring a sketchbook and pencil and join us for an afternoon of drawing in one of Maine's fabulous art museums. Forge an intimate connection with museum collections, while improving your own work by studying the techniques of the masters. Guidance and critical feedback are provided as needed. At the end of our visit, we will meet up to share our results with the group. Museum admission is included in fee. Location: Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville. Participants will meet at the museum.

Humans have been weaving baskets for hundreds of thousands of years. Many plant materials may be used to weave with: vines, leaves, bark, wood, and more. Basket weaving requires various skills, all involving twisting and pulling and wrapping the materials around each other. Weaving a small project, like a fish (pictured), or a heart or five-pointed star, along with other shapes, can provide a comprehensive, beginner-friendly introduction to most of the skills required for full-scale basketry. Learn to make a beautiful woven window feeder for birds! We'll cover identification, responsible collection, materials processing and storage, and creation, including the basics of stake-and-strand waling and randing weaves.

Remember sitting around the campfire toasting marshmallows and telling scary stories? In this short course with Laurie Notch, you will learn the history of the ghost story, why it is popular in cultures worldwide, and how to spin your own spooky yarn for fun and entertainment.

Are you ready to go fishing? Merrymeeting FISHING ADVENTURE CAMP is a full 3-day freshwater fishing program for beginner or experienced anglers, grades 3 to 6. It is fun, safe and educational. Lifelong fisherman and college professor Martin Samelson will be there to identify target species (Bass, Trout, Sunfish, Pickerel and Perch), help anglers match their bait and tackle to their target species, and encourage ''Catch & Release" fishing to be mindful of Maine's natural marine resources. Info sheet regarding equipment/materials will be provided. *Pickup & Drop-off at Adult Ed Center in Topsham. Session 1: Tues-Thur: 7/15, 7/16, 7/17 (Rain date: 7/18). Join Catherine for this 1 night class to learn new ways to incorporate mixed media techniques in your work. Create depth, texture and interest with gouache, fluid acrylic, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, dual tipped markers and posca pens (and more). Class will start with a refresher on color and techniques covered in previous levels and then transition to discuss new ways to think about layers while introducing various mixed media supplies. We will spend the rest of class playing with a variety of materials to incorporate new and old techniques to complete a fun and uplifting illustration. Materials fee: $20.
