English for Beginners

Are you interested in improving your English skills? Learning English can help you communicate with your child's school and increase your ability to read and speak English. This fun class will teach basic communication, life skills, and literacy. New students may be placed into this class after an intake and assessment meeting: call 730-5040 for an appointment. Instructor Peter Hofmann is an advisor at USM and is currently working toward his PhD.
English Intermediate
with Jennie Robinson, Scarborough Adult Learning Center

This interactive class is for students who are advancing from a beginner level and have a CASAS score at or above 220. We will work on increasing our understanding of the English language to engage in conversations and written exchanges about familiar topics. Students will need access to a tablet or computer for class and homework. Jennie Robinson is an English Language Arts teacher at Scarborough Middle School.

Bilingual Conversation Class (Spanish/English)
with Amanda Labelle & Leticia Guadalupe Cordova, RSU #13 Adult and Community Education

Join us for a fun conversation class to practice your listening and speaking skills. Whether your native language is Spanish or English, this class will provide you the opportunity to engage in weekly-themed conversation with other bilingual students. Topics may include, but are not limited to; food, music, movies, holidays, pop culture, current events, and/or games. Students will be able to support each other in strengthening their skills.
Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate (Students should have enough vocabulary to practice conversation in a supportive environment).
When: Wednesdays, 530-7:00PM (no class on Nov. 22nd)
Where: In-Person at the McLain Building or join via video conference; our blended classroom technology will help everyone feel part of the conversation whether they are in the classroom or joining remotely.
Cost: $75 for 6 sessions, OR no-cost for students currently enrolled in an Adult Education academic program (English Language Learning, HiSET, Maine College & Career Access, Workforce Training).

The Learning Center is open to all adults in need of academic instruction and guidance. Hours vary by day, and we will try to meet you on your schedule. Our staff provides individualized instruction in the areas of:
- High School Equivalency
- HiSET Prep
- Accuplacer Prep
- Math and ELA instruction to prepare you for college-level coursework
- General reading, writing, and math tutoring for anyone pursuing college or career education
- Workforce credential or certification tutoring and prep
- College and Career advising
All services through the Learning Center are FREE of charge. If you or anyone you know could use any of these services, please contact us.

Class In this class for intermediate to advanced English speakers (CASAS Level B and up) we discuss current events, holidays, and American culture. Practice your listening, reading, speaking and pronunciation skills.
