If you are an adult without a high school diploma, the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) program could be your route to improved career prospects, a college education and increased earnings potential. Adult diploma programs are central to the mission and tradition of Maine Adult Education. Get your diploma and be one step closer to achieving your life's goals! Our daytime learning center is open only by appointment due to Covid-19 restrictions, but we have an active tutoring program available via Zoom.  Email us or call our office to get started on your journey to a diploma or beyond!

The 180 hour Certified Nursing Assistant Course is designed to prepare the student to be a Nursing Assistant. Call the Adult Ed Office at 778-3460 for application, registration requirements and placement on a waiting list. Details regarding dates, location and fees will be provided to participants as the class list is completed.

Assessments required

Do you have a desire to care for elderly and start working in the healthcare field? Be a Certified Nursing Assistant and enjoy the outstanding benefits that you get in this industry.

 First, you must complete a state-approved education program. Next, you must pass a competency exam. Requirements vary from state to state, so check with our program for details.

 The course will consist of one hundred (180) hours of instruction. Ninety (90) hours will be spent in the classroom, twenty (20) hours skills lab, and seventy (70) hours of clinical experience in a long-term health-care facility.

The Learning Center is open to all adults in need of academic instruction and guidance. Hours vary by day, and we will try to meet you on your schedule. Our staff provides individualized instruction in the areas of:

  • High School Equivalency
  • HiSET Prep
  • Accuplacer Prep
  • Math and ELA instruction to prepare you for college-level coursework
  • General reading, writing, and math tutoring for anyone pursuing college or career education
  • Workforce credential or certification tutoring and prep
  • College and Career advising

All services through the Learning Center are FREE of charge. If you or anyone you know could use any of these services, please contact us.

If you never finished high school, and want to earn your high school credential, but aren’t sure where to start... reach out to us here at the Scarborough Adult Learning Center at Scarborough High School!

Passing the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) earns you the equivalency of a high school diploma. There are five sections to the computer-based test (Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies and Science). Our individual online tutoring program can help you prepare, take, and successfully pass all five tests. Students are given pre-tests to determine whether they're ready to take the actual Official Tests or may need some preparation work. All services and tests are FREE.

We're offering Intakes and Testing, Mon and Wed 3-5:30, BUT BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
