Note: This class will be offered virtually through Zoom. Students will occasionally be required to come to Skowhegan Area High School for testing.

This class assists students who are not native English speakers develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Instruction is designed to meet learners’ needs and can include helping participants with such important tasks as exploring how to talk with their child’s teacher, scheduling healthcare appointments, completing grocery shopping, obtaining a driver’s license, finding employment or learning about other valuable community resources. Students can enter the class at any time and there is no charge for instruction. Learners at all levels of English proficiency are welcome. For more information, please call 474-7553.

Are you someone in the community who is not a native English speaker? Would you like help with your English skills? You will have an opportunity to speak, read, listen, and write using English with more confidence. Gaining language skills to be able to work with teachers, make appointments, as well as shopping, and getting and keep a job, are all part of the language basics covered in this course. Students can enroll and join this free class at any time. Learners of all levels of English (Basic, Conversational, Fluent, or Proficient) are welcome! This course is designed for students who have some advanced English language skills. Students will practice communication skills in everyday situations and build a larger vocabulary through listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar activities. The use of technology will also be integrated. Prerequisite: Completion of Intermediate Level ESOL or appropriate score on CASAS test (221-235+, ESL 6 and above). Rolling admissions.

Are you interested in improving your English skills? Learning English can help you communicate with your child's school and increase your ability to read and speak English. This fun class will teach basic communication, life skills, and literacy. you will need access to email and a tablet or computer to study outside of class each week. New students may be placed into this class after an intake and assessment meeting: call 730-5040 for an appointment. Instructor Peter Hofmann is an advisor at USM and is currently working toward his PhD.
