This class provides small group or individual classes for personal help with basic reading and math. If you, or someone you know, have difficulty reading or need some review with basic math, we can help. Classes are open to anyone 17 years of age and over. There is no fee for this course, and it can make a difference!

Reading and Writing Foundations for ESOL

Students will practice reading everyday English used in the community, such as newspapers, doctor’s instructions and mail. The class will also give students practice writing basic English sentences and paragraphs through letter writing, short stories and more. This course is for ESOL students who tested as high beginner to high intermediate on the CASAS test (200-220). Students must call 892-1819 to make an appointment with our ABE Coordinator for testing and placement. Rolling admission. No class on 11/28.

ESOL students will practice speaking, listening and understanding everyday English conversation in many different situations, such as on the telephone, going to the doctor, and applying for a job. Students will learn and practice pronunciation of English sounds. They will practice forming spoken sentences correctly. Students will also learn how to use many resources to help them study English conversation beyond the classroom. Rolling admission. Call our ABE at 892-1819 to set up an appointment for registration and testing. No class 11/28.

Kathy Floyd has been teaching ESOL, HiSET, High School Diploma at WRAE since 2009. She received the New Teacher of the Year award from the Maine Adult Education Association for the 2009-2010 school year.

 Sandy Warren has been teaching ESOL for the past five years in the U.S., taught ESOL in the Dominican Republic for 10 years, built ESOL curriculum, and led ESOL professional development groups. She holds an MSEd from St. Joseph’s College, secondary life science teaching endorsement, and is completing her MA in TESOL from Cornerstone University in Michigan.

Come join our small group of students working to increase language proficiency in everyday conversation, pronunciation, grammar, and writing.

Based on class size and needs, class time may be adapted or changed. For academic courses, per state funding requirements, we must do an assessment of each student using the CASAS at enrollment and again prior to course completion, with some exceptions. A 60-hour 8-week course designed for new American job seekers who are in ESOL 5 and above. Students learn to apply their professional, transferable skills to the US workforce. Students will work on their English through an emphasis on networking skills and will also work on their financial literacy skills. Students will prepare a professional portfolio including a resume, cover letter, etc. Area employers will be brought into the class. Students will also use the computer lab to focus on job search skills. Students will receive advising and case management services and for those students who may need it, translations and evaluations of college transcripts.
