Carving Fruit & Vegetables

Join our RSU 3 Artist in Residence Hector Pietra-Santa to learn the art of fruit and vegetable carving.  This session is a free introduction to the craft, with produce and carving tools provided. 

For those who like the craft and want to continue, another class will be offered March 20 where students will pay a small fee for the produce and their own carving tool to keep.

Drawing class includes: Drawing, working with and without a grid, shading values, enlarging and reducing, observation of shapes and angles. Please bring drawing paper, pencils, erasers, ruler, stump or tortillion oil, and water colors. Students need to bring a small set of tube paint, a few brushes (large and small and bristle brushes for oil) watercolor brushes should be for water-color painting and watercolor paper, canvas for oil painting. Please bring paper towel or paint rags for oil and watercolor 

Intermediate Watercolor

Learn new concepts and expand on your existing skills in color theory, blending and application. With step-by-step instructions, learn how to recreate still-life themes and comprehend the utilization of positive and negative space. Work on slightly more difficult still-life and landscape subjects while learning how to create the illusion of distance and composition.

Prerequisite: Watercolor Basics.

Bring 1 small tube each: cadmium yellow (light), cobalt blue, alizarin crimson, 1 paint palette (Russel says folding ones are ideal!), 1 round #10 watercolor brush; 1 inch wide flat brush, 1 drawing pencil #2H, 1 eraser, 1 light-weight board or piece of cardboard.; and two sheets of Arches watercolor paper, 140 lb. cold press, 22x30 inches (total supply cost approx. $80).

Note: Please purchase Arches, as the quality of watercolor paper is essential for handling the techniques you will be taught in class. Please bring any colors you already have.

Russel Whitten, a local artist and teacher, studied at The Art Students League of New York, Heartwood College of Art, and is a member of The Ogunquit Art Association/Barn Gallery. Students adore his laid-back, encouraging teaching style.

Have you always wanted to make socks? Have you dabbled in sock knitting but just can't seem to get the hang of it? Or, are you an experienced sock knitter looking to improve your skills? In these tutorials we'll break down sock construction from heel to toe, compare different methods, discuss patterns, yarns, books and resources to provide you with what you need to explore the rich world of sock knitting. Prerequisites: You must already know how to knit, purl, increase, decrease, cast on, and bind off. Experience knitting in the round is helpful. Double pointed or circular needles are both suitable. Materials: 100g sock weight yarn such as Berroco Sox; four or five double-pointed knitting needles size 0, 1, or 2; darning needle, scissors, tape measure, and stitch markers if you have them.

Porch Sign Painting

You have seen these tall wood signs propped up on people’s front entrances. Now you can make them yourself. These signs are 48” tall and 9.5” wide. You get to choose ahead of time your stencil design with many seasonal and holiday designs to choose from and your projects background paint/stain color. When you arrive to class you get to do all the fun stuff. There will be a lot of paint colors to choose from to make your project your own. The class is instructor-led, so you will have the experience of Gabrielle to guide you along the way. Learn how to avoid those nasty bleeds on your project and stencil with confidence. When you leave, you take home that evening a beautiful project.  Materials fee of $20 (cash please) is payable to the instructor at class.

Getting to Know Your Sewing Machine; Learning to Sew from the Bobbin Up!

Ruth’s SOLD OUT class is back. Do you have a sewing machine but don’t know how to use it? Do you have a machine but it isn’t working properly? Maybe you inherited a machine that means a lot to you but have no idea how it works? Ruth Howe, a.k.a. “The Barefoot Seamstress” has been repairing machines for years and has a wealth of knowledge (and the manual!) for almost every machine and will teach you everything you need to know about yours!! Over the course you will go over your machine, learn to clean it properly, know your manual, tension adjustments for different projects, the do’s and don'ts of your machine, learn sewing terms, essential tools, needles and pins, threads, and fabrics too! 

No machine? You can contact the instructor for information on borrowing one or where to get one to work on. 

This is an all inclusive, top to bottom, in and out sewing class! Dust off your (or your grandmothers) machine and bring it and yourself to this class! Textbook included. Six weeks

Using a provided sewing machine, this class is intended to give a beginning sewist skills to create simple non-clothing projects or a garment. Those with more experience and/or their own machine can bring in materials and pattern for a project of their choosing to work on with guidance and/or specific instruction.

Depending on needs, topics covered may include: seam treatments, using a pattern, repairing/replacing items, basic garment construction, sleeves, buttonholes, zippers, etc.

Ms. McCann-Baker is a life long hobby sewist and has taught sewing to elementary age students.
