Learn about the different parts of the bagpipes, how to tune them, and how they're different from other instruments. We'll talk about the pipe's history and traditions, find out about available classes and how you can participate in a pipe and drum band. Make a Knotweed Flute
with Zack Rouda, Scarborough Adult Learning Center
Creatively repurpose invasives! Japanese knotweed is an abundant and frustrating invasive. If you’re seeking non-chemical responses, explore creative, out-of-the-box ways to put this plant to use: its young shoots are edible, its roots may be used to fight Lyme disease, and its stalks, resembling bamboo, can be fashioned into a functional musical instrument. Cover identification, best gathering practices, materials storage and processing; use knives, wood-burners, rubber bands and string to make 1-2 types of flutes. All materials included. Zack is Director and an instructor for Rewild Maine, an educational nonprofit promoting nature connection by teaching small-scale, place-based living skills; partial proceeds benefit Rewild Maine.
Wed, 3/4/2020, 5:30 to 7:30 pm, $32
