Animal Enrichment

With some control over their social and physical surroundings, enrichment gives our pets a good way to express their innate behaviors and promotes both mental and physical stimulation. Discover the toys, made or purchased, that offer food-based enrichment, to promote foraging and extends feeding periods, sensory enrichment involving any of the five senses, and cognitive enrichment, which aims to improve mental stimulation-all of which will provide entertainment and enhance the life of your pets. This is an informational session, no pets allowed due to allergens.

Andra Yanchenko holds animal care certifications as a veterinary assistant, hospice & palliative care, pet nutrition, human-animal bond, and dog training. She opened PAWSsibilities LLC/One Dog at a Time Shelter in 2022, focusing on canine awareness/enrichment, doggy daycare, and sheltering animals.

Intro to Pickling

Do you enjoy the taste of a crisp pickle? Learn to make them so you can enjoy them in your own home! Get a brief review of the fundamentals of food preservation and some of the common ways you can preserve food at home. Discuss the pickling process and water bath canning, and then make pickled cucumbers in a boiling water Leave with your own jar of fresh-made pickles! Bring oven mitts or a pot holder to transport your hot jar home.

Tom Loder is a certified Master Food Preserver through University of Maine Cooperative Extension. A fourth generation family food preserver, Tom has won several ribbons for his jams, jellies and baked goods at the Cumberland Fair.

Learn about the grapes and techniques used to produce some of the most flavorful, robust red, white, and rosé wines available. Find out how each variety differs from the others, what makes it so special, and how these unique characteristics can contribute to an excellent tasting experience. Discuss how to serve and store them, as well as what to pair them with. Sample four different wines paired with light, healthy appetizers, courtesy of Vic & Whit's. Gene Barber, a wholesale rep for Devenish wines, started his first wine tasting club in 1974 and has been an avid student since. He deals primarily in low-yield, low-production sustainable, organic, and natural wines.

Tips and tricks to keep your account from being hacked and spoofed.  Learn about authentication options, enabling two-factor authentication, and how to know exactly what you are sharing and who you are sharing it with.  We’ll cover what to do if your account has been compromised and best practices to prevent it from happening repeatedly. Students must have an audio- and video-enabled laptop, desktop, or tablet with reliable internet to participate in class. We do not recommend using a smartphone.

HeartSaver CPR/ First Aid/AED Certification Training

 If life-saving techniques might be part of your job, the Red Cross-approved Heartsaver training for adults, children, and infants covers CPR, first aid, AED, and even naloxone administration. This 5-hour class includes practice with life-size dummies that simulate the effects of life-saving interventions. The instructor will email certification cards about a week after training is completed. Instructor:

Acorns: the amazing, bountiful, ancient staple of humanity! But did you ever try eating a raw acorn? Yuck! However, it just takes some simple processing to transform acorns into a truly delicious grain-like (and gluten free) food. This is real food; we eat hundreds of pounds a year. As part of this day we honor indigenous cultures that have enjoyed acorns for thousands of years, and we investigate the potential of acorn to transform modern food systems and culture. We'll begin the day with harvesting and end with baking!
