Map & Compass Level I

Hike, snowshoe, geocache, hunt, and enjoy the woods and fields of Maine with confidence that you can read a topographic map, understand the symbols, know which way a river flows, plot a course bearing, use online resources, and how to get to safety. 

Familiarization with using a compass and map outdoors included. Students must have a DeLorme Maine Gazetteer, and a 2-degree baseplate compass. Students must have an audio- and video-enabled laptop, desktop, or tablet with reliable internet to participate in class. We do not recommend using a smartphone.

 

Yin Yoga

This contemplative, slow-paced exercise focuses on stretching the body's connective tissues and relaxing the muscles by holding poses for three to five minutes. Postures can be held when seated or lying flat. This technique is calming and balanced, enhances joint flexibility, lowers tension and boosts energy. No experience necessary.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing; bring a yoga mat, yoga blocks, a bolster (couch pillows work) and a blanket.

Jessy Lynn Ostara, a 500-hour Certified Yoga Instructor, has years of experience teaching several movement modalities. Her concentration is in meditative belly dance, yin, hatha and chair yoga. She is also a certified meditation teacher through the ShivaShakti School of Yoga and Healing Arts.

Strengthen and deepen your Tai Chi practice by expanding your basic exercises while putting moves together to create a form. Some meditation practices may be included as an aid to further relaxation, stress reduction, and pain management. Chairs will be available for those that need them. Wear loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes. Prerequisite: Beginner Tai Chi Level I. Wear loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes.

Laurie Huenteo received her Tai Chi certification through the Functional Aging Institute/Open Door Tai Chi. She has been practicing Yang-style Tai Chi and Qigong for 13+ years and teaching for the last seven. She is passionate about teaching Tai Chi.

Aerial Yoga Section 1

Classes in aerial yoga include flips, tricks and inversions. By keeping the swing at hip height, it transforms into a hammock that supports you during backbends and inversions and offers a unique way to build core, arm, and leg strength. You'll flow and fly in your aerial swing during these 50-minute lessons, fusing the grace of yoga with the freedom of flight. Wear comfortable workout-type clothes but nothing too loose, and be prepared to go barefoot.

Ashley Jolly is certified in both barre and aerial yoga. Her main focuses are on strength, stability, and flexibility, as she finds these to be the trifecta of great fitness.

Is Pickleball for you?

Join us for the basics for those new to the game and absolute beginners. Learn the rules of scoring, court basics, the non-volley zone, common terms, faults, hot tips, and serving - the most significant difference from tennis. Students will be notified, via text, of weather location change the morning of class.

Bring a pickleball paddle and ball (approx. $15-$40 on Amazon, deals for packs of 2 paddles), active wear, weather-appropriate clothing, tennis shoes, and water.

Andra Yanchenko specializes in fitness, functional movement, and racquet sports. She is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, ACE Health Coach, USTA, USPTA, PTR Coach, and YogaFit Instructor.

Plant Walk for All (Accessibility Focused)

Slow down, be mindful, and carefully explore the urban wilds of Wabanaki land on the wheelchair- and walker-accessible Eastern Bike Trail in Saco. Take your time looking closely at plants and ecology on a small section of trail as you learn the names and gifts of trees and plants you might normally pass by. Registration closes at noon on 9/27.

Wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. The trail is wide, mostly flat, and has compressed sand. Meet at the trailhead behind Thornton Academy. Walk begins promptly at 2 PM. Rain date 10/6.

Laura Grover is a plant and bird hobbyist, botanical illustrator for Fedco Seeds, and a mindfulness ambassador. She has led many plant identification and mindful foraging walks for people of all ages. She enjoys bringing people together to look closely in nature, practice mindfulness outside, and be a sensory animal in the woods.

Boat America

This is the course that meets Maine’s requirements for people born on or after Jan.1, 1999 to operate boats inland and coastal waters. Learn boating skills from experienced boaters who patrol midcoast coastal waters from Small Point to Port Clyde. TOPICS INCLUDE: Introduction to Boating: types of power boats, boating terms, sailboats paddle boats, and engine types. Boating Laws: Boat registration, regulations, hull identification numbers, required safety equipment, Federal boating laws, state boating laws, and reporting accidents. Safety Equipment: life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment. Safe Operation and Navigation: buoys and beacons, aids to navigation, navigation rules, docking, and the dangers of alcohol on the water. Boating Emergencies: hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather. Trailering: types of trailers, lights, hitches, towing a trailer. Sports and Boating: water-skiing, hunting and hunting gear, personal watercraft operation, and other boating tips. New Maine Boating Law: to operate a boat over 25 hp, on inland and coastal waters persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1999 must have taken an in-person Boat America course, pass an exam, have the state’s Boat America card, and be registered in the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife data base. Fall Hawk Watching & Identification

There are many native hawks in Maine, learn where, when, and what to look for! Learn how to identify different hawks, which ones stay in the state year-round and which ones migrate. Discuss migratory routes throughout the state and some unique strategies that hawks use to survive this extremely challenging journey. Review the best sighting locations and what equipment and resources you should bring along to enhance the experience.

Linda Woodard, an avid bird watcher, has been Director of the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center for 18+ years. She has taught high school biology, bird watching, marsh ecology, and a wide variety of environmental topics.
