This class is designed to stimulate interest and questions about beekeeping as a hobby or to help with pollination. Many join the class because they are aware of the huge importance and decline of honeybees and other pollinators and just want to help. Peter Peter Cowin is President of Penobscot County Beekeepers’ Association and a member of the Maine State Beekeepers’ Association Swarm Team. He has grown his hobby into a cottage business known as “Hampden Honey”. Peter also writes a monthly column “The Bee Whisperer’s Diary” in the Bangor Daily News.

Beekeeping Seminar

Peter Cowin, A.K.A., The Bee Whisperer, will teach a one day class designed for those planning or considering starting to keep honeybees. The class will entail 4 hours in the class room learning basic equipment, husbandry, where to locate hives and how to care for the bees, harvesting your own honey and to get them through their first winter. Weather permitting, students will open hives in the afternoon and see everything alive and buzzing. Protective equipment provided for the day, please come wearing long pants, sleeves and closed toes footwear. A full range of equipment will be available for sale so you can be prepared to order bees and start beekeeping!

Beekeeping, Intermediate

This three week intermediate level beekeeping course is designed to improve the skills of beekeepers that have had bees for at least one season. The course will emphasize practical honey bee colony management skills for beekeepers with some beekeeping experience.

To enroll in enrichment classes, particpants must be at least 18 years old and not enrolled in school.

Beginner Level Yoga

Yoga has been shown to have vast health benefits for people of all body types and fitness levels. If you can stretch your muscles, you can do yoga! This six week series will introduce basic yoga postures (along with modifications) and healthy alignment with some breath work and relaxation/meditation sprinkled in. We will play with linking postures together into a gentle ‘flow’ sequence that will stretch your muscles and relax your mind. Bring a yoga mat and wear clothes that allow for unrestricted movement. Some props will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own. Participants should have the ability to get up and down from the floor fairly easily, and be cleared by a medical professional if there are chronic health issues such as high blood pressure.

To enroll in enrichment classes, particpants must be at least 18 years old and not enrolled in school.

Beginner Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is intentionally paying attention with non-judging awareness and a centering in the present moment. Mindfulness practices help keep the mind calm and focused, and avoid being stressed, distracted and scattered. Learn various mindfulness meditations through guided breath, body scan, mindful eating, and loving kindness meditations. Easy to learn body scanning increases awareness of body and mind. Loving kindness meditations teach compassion to self and others. Learn to mobilize inner resources for coping, growing, healing, and approaching life. Deborah holds a BA in psychology with courses in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and a certification in quantum healing hypnosis.

Beginner Pilates

Calendar Feb 27, 2019 at 5:30 pm, runs for 10 weeks
In this class we will work on full beginner repertoire, 18 classic pilates exercises, as originated by Joseph Pilates. Everyone will be working at a level that is right for them. I will keep introducing variations and intermediate exercises to keep us engaged and inspired to keep growing.

Please bring a thick exercise/yoga mat for adequate cushioning of the spine.

 

Beginner to Intermediate Horsemanship W19

Learn horse handling and horsemanship skills in a positive atmosphere. This “hands-on” course is designed for those who are planning to become new horse owners or have recently become new horse owners without prior experience. Students will be paired or grouped up, depending on class size, and assigned a horse for hands-on instruction. Students will learn safe handling, proper positioning around the horse, training techniques in reference to groundwork, general equine facts on health and safety and proper tacking up and fit. Students will need a digital thermometer, boots with a heel (or hiker style high tops shoes) and optional leather gloves. Student limit 8
