How to Cast a Fly Rod—The first step to fly fishing

Learn the fundamentals of casting on a one-to-one basis. Beginners to advanced casters will learn or improve the basic cast, roll cast, and mends. In addition, you will learn line management, casting in wind, hauling, and other useful tasks. Take advantage of a certified casting instructor to assist you with any casting problems. If you have an interest in being certified yourself, I can offer advice with that process.

This class will be held OUTDOORS on the Skowhegan High School premises. Bring a 4-7 wt. fly rod with a floating line. Instructor will provide a leader with a practice fly. DRESS FOR OUTDOOR PRACTICE. Dates of class can be flexible if weather conditions prevent a class.

Malaga Island Historical Sea Kayak and Walk

Calendar Jun 4, 2024 at 8 am, runs for 1 week

Paddle 1.5 miles by sea kayak after an orientation and safety briefing with Master Maine Guide, Alice in her provided kayaks. Learn about the late Civil War mixed-race community and their eviction in 1912 by the state of Maine. Learn the prehistory of the island and its current use by walking the trails on the island stopping to learn about the different sites on the island. No buildings remain. You'll have a chance to eat the snacks/lunch that you brought at the southern end of the island. Afterwards we'll paddle back to our start. You must be able to walk unaided on uneven trails. Five hour trip meets at 8:15am in Cundy's Harbor (parking is about 1/2 mile away) and returns about 1:15pm. Weather conditions unsafe for paddling will cancel the trip. June 4, 2024.

Let our Adult Ed program make the arrangements for the tickets, transportation, food and parking, so you can enjoy a baseball game watching the future stars of the Boston Red Sox. Seats are in the Gifford’s Home Maine Ice Cream pavilion located in right-field. Modeled after the iconic “Monster Seats” at Fenway Park, the Pavilion offers some of the most unique seats in Minor League Baseball.  The Portland Sea Dogs are the double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The Sea Dogs will be playing the Akron Rubber Ducks (Cleveland Guardians affiliate) with a start time of 7:00pm. Book your nine inning vacation as soon as possible, we have only the capacity of 8 fans for this trip.

In the first live online class, we'll start by learning camera settings, aperture, shutter, ISO, white balance and other compositional techniques critical to lighthouse photography. The following Saturday, during the Cruise, we’ll focus on photographing the wildlife and lighthouses, sharing techniques and approaches. Finally, we’ll meet online the following week to share, learn and critique our images. Limited to 15 students. This workshop is for beginner and intermediate photographers.

This two-hour course will include walking in the woods to find edible wild food along with detailed descriptions of plant habitat and structure of the plants. Bring: Notebook and pen, basket, mesh or other bags, wax or brown paper bags, knife, bug repellent and hat, water or other refreshment and a snack, gloves, waterproof boots (preferred), tall socks you can tuck your pant legs. Optional: gps, backpack, field guide, magnifying glass
