Preserving the Harvest: Salsa*

Would you like to enjoy the fresh taste of homemade tomato salsa all year long?

This hands-on food preservation workshop will teach you the basic steps for hot water bath canning and freezing. Participants will learn recommended methods for preserving foods, the latest and safest recipes, about equipment to insure safety, and how to check for properly sealed jars. Participants will also receive a “Preserving the Harvest” food preservation information packet. There is a $20 Materials fee per person, separate from the registration fee, due directly to the instructor at the start of class.

Please bring a potholder with you to the workshop. You will be able to take home a jar of what we prepare that evening!

 

Please mark your calendar for Sept 30 in case a storm makeup is needed. Limit 10 students.

Somatic yoga is a series of gentle movements grounded in mindfulness of the body, heart, and mind. In this series, we'll deepen into the practices from the introductory workshop. Somatic exercises, Qigong, guided meditation, and intuitive self-guided movement will help us connect deeper with our inner resources. Experience greater health and well-being while releasing tension and stress. Wear comfortable clothing, have a mat, and any props you might want for getting comfortable (a couple blocks, or books, a blanket or two, and/or a pillow or cushion). Pre-registration is required to receive online link.

Kathryn Gardner, RSMT, RYT is a somatic movement therapist and yoga teacher with a background in bodywork. She teaches a variety of classes and works with individuals and groups in her private practice of SomaSoul® somatic movement therapy. SomaSoul® is a mind-body healing modality that integrates deep listening and mindful awareness with the freedom of expressive arts and movement. She is a member of the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA).

Zumba Gold is Bold!

Zumba Gold is Bold! is designed for all ages - for those new to Zumba, for those who have had an injury, or those who love Zumba, but would like a modified version. Zumba Gold runs for 45 minutes, unlike Zumba that runs for an hour. There is verbal cuing as well as non-verbal cues.  The music is the same great, fun, upbeat music.  You will sweat and you will receive the many benefits of dancing. The only change is the movements will be less stressful on your joints and your body.  It’s a class where you are exercising, but having fun doing it!!  This is an in-person class; no class 11/11/24.

Lisa Elliot has been a licensed Zumba and Zumba Gold instructor since 2015.  Her specialty is Zumba Gold. She thoroughly enjoys getting to know those that come to her classes and seeing them have fun and getting the health benefits of dancing!

Becoming a Notary Public

The main responsibility of a notary is to formally witness transactions involving paper documents and, in Maine, to perform marriage ceremonies. Study the office's history as well as its responsibilities, qualifications and record-keeping requirements. You must live in ME or be a NH resident regularly employed or with a business/trade in Maine. Leave with the test completed and a plan in place for turning in your paperwork. A notary license is $50 and valid for seven years.

Bethany Mulkern has been a notary public since May 2019 and has performed various notarial duties, including weddings. As a result, she is well-versed in all aspects of the role of a notary public and has a great deal of enthusiasm about the subject matter, which she's excited to share with her students!

Maine Guide and expert birder Gary Roberts will discuss traits specific to birds of the salt, brackish, and freshwater marshes. This class includes a field trip, 8 AM - !0 AM, Saturday, October 26 to Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston.

Cooking with Sourdough

Learn to make, feed, grow, and use sourdough and discover creative and unusual ways to use it in your baking repertoire. As you sample some sourdough-based treats, watch a demonstration of how to make traditional sourdough bread, waffles, and a quick bread. Leave with a sourdough culture and recipes so you can start creating your own mouthwatering treats at home. This is a demonstration class, however, you are welcome to either watch or put on an apron and join in the fun. Recipes provided. Bring your appetite, an apron, baggies for leftovers, and a small lidded container to bring your sourdough starter home in.

Mary Bailey, pastry chef and past owner/chef of Thyme and Honey Bakery in Biddeford, is passionate about baking bread and teaching people how to incorporate homemade bread into their daily lives.
