The National Digital Equity Center has been, and will continue to be, a thought leader on digital equity and digital inclusion.The National Digital Equity Center provides Digital Literacy classes that provide opportunities for professional growth, personal enrichment, the development of computer skills, and preparation for professional careers in a supportive environment. Customized training and consulting solutions are offered to businesses and industries, as well as community residents. Online classes are held in a live interactive form using a videoconference platform; in-person classes are at community locations in collaboration with partner organizations.  We provide all instruction in a small group interactive learning setting, whether it is online or in-person.

The group leader, Dr. Thomas M. Kane, has published 27 books and has extensive experience teaching writing.

Becoming a Worksheet Warrior-Excel Basics

This course is designed for beginning Excel users, demonstrating the basic layout and functionality of the program. In this course, students will learn to create new files, insert and manipulate data, and learn some useful and common functions. The goals of this course are to impart a basic mastery of Excel and to provide a solid foundation from which students can continue to develop their spreadsheet skills. This is an in-person class. 

John was born and raised in Ellsworth and received a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Maine.  He currently works in the field of sustainable aquaculture, focusing particularly on recirculating aquaculture systems.  John is an avid Excel/spreadsheet user, both within and outside of work, and looks forward to sharing his enthusiasm for it as one of the most accessible and versatile computational tools today.

Boat America is a National Association of Boating Law Administrators certificate class that offers an in-depth and interesting boating safety course, and provides the knowledge needed to obtain a boating certificate. Some insurance companies will also offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course. Introduction to Boating – Types of power boats, boating vocabulary, sailboats, paddle boats, powering boats, and engine types. Boating Law – Boat registration, regulations, hull identification numbers, required safety equipment, Federal boating law, state boating law, and reporting accidents. Safety Equipment – Life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment. Safe Operation and Navigation – Buoys and beacons, aids to navigation, navigation rules, docking, and the dangers of alcohol on the water. Boating Emergencies – Hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather. Steve McGrath is a professional freelance Photographer and Photography Teacher who has been creating images for 30 years. Steve began his career by shooting sports photography for local high schools before adding weddings and stock agencies to his repertoire. His love of the outdoors has since led him to focus more on his true passion — nature photography. Many of his images have been published in school text books. His favorite places to shoot are Acadia National Park in Maine, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Fundamentals of Home Canning

Have you ever wanted to try canning, but were unsure how to get started? Or perhaps you are concerned about food safety, and wondering how to ensure that your canned food is both delicious and safe. Well, this is the class for you! Join Allison Carroll Duffy, Master Food Preserver and cookbook author, for this hands-on workshop covering all that you need to know to get started canning your own food. We'll cover the basics of safe home canning, including proper procedures, techniques, and use of tools and equipment. Then we’ll learn hands-on--working together as a group and going step-by-step--to make and can a big batch of jam. We’ll use the boiling water bath method, which is the same method you’ll use for making many other canned goods you might want to make at home, including pickles, salsas, chutneys, and fruit. While this class will focus primarily on the boiling water bath method of canning, pressure canning will also be discussed. At the end of the class, there will be plenty of jam to taste, and each participant will go home with a jar of jam to enjoy…as well as all the know-how you need to start canning confidently at home!
