Sew for "Dress A Girl"

Free

with NACE Staff, Noble Adult & Community Education

Calendar Apr 28, 2026 at 10 am
10 additional sessions through Jun 30, 2026

Every girl deserves at least one dress. Since October 2009, "Dress A Girl Around The World" has reached over 81 countries with a recorded number of over one million dresses delivered to girls in need around the world. Recently, we spoke with the Maine DAG Ambassador, Jane, who is in need of help with sewing menstral pads and dresses for girls in need.

We will be holding 9 sewing dates for those who are interested in volunteering their time to sew. You can stay the whole time or for a few hours; any help is appreciated. If there are more requests for sewing days, we will update that information on our website and social media. Feel free to bring a lunch with you; the sewing room at NACE has a refrigerator you can keep your food/drinks in.

We do ask volunteers to please register for the days they wish to come in and sew to be sure the sewing room and supplies are all ready.

Second, you’ll be introduced each week to a different nature preserve that touches on the Bay, with complete directions for exploring the trails at your own pace and time. *This class does not involve any outdoor excursions.

Becoming an Artist without YouTube: Part One

$170

with Ed Higgins, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education

Calendar Apr 28, 2026 at 1 pm, runs for 10 weeks

Part One: Learning to See. Instructor Ed Higgins has helped many local artists of all experience levels gain confidence in their drawing simply by refusing to reinforce many common misconceptions about art which abound in the social media milieu. We learn art by actively doing it, not by passively watching. Understanding how to see like an artist is the first, essential step upon which all subsequent fine art skills depend. Simple, careful observation. Paying attention. It’s not mysterious, it’s not magic. But there are no shortcuts, and it does take practice. The trick is making the practice of observation itself fun, and that requires a willingness to stop telling yourself that you can’t do something. Focusing on results rather than learning, and product instead of process leads to impediments in development which effectively blinds artists rather than actually helping them improve their ability to see. The materials list for this class are: 1) your eyes, in reasonably good working order, 2) a sketchbook, and 3) a pencil and eraser. *No Class: 4/21.
