"You are what you eat!" How often have most of us heard this phrase? While it may be a common saying, it remains a very true one for many good reasons. Food has the ability to affect our bodies and minds in profound ways. It can influence how we feel, think, sleep, and function every day. By choosing healthy, nutrient-dense, calorie-appropriate, organic foods and drinking adequate amounts of water, we provide ourselves with optimal opportunities to experience positive physical and mental health.

The outcome of this course is for the learner to describe how food affects one's mood, the types of nutrients that can improve or enhance mental health, types of eating disorders, and how to incorporate mindful eating as a way of supporting positive mental health.

Certificate in Global Healing Systems

(13 contact hours) Global healing traditions have a long and rich history that dates back thousands of years. Reflecting the specific and unique characteristics of their regions, these traditional healing systems provide the primary form of health care for the majority of the world's population.

In this certificate program, you'll deepen your knowledge of medical treatment by learning about these various global healing practices. We'll start with an overview of the field to get a sense of how these alternative practices differ from conventional medical systems. Then we'll explore in depth six global traditions: Ayurvedic medicine of India, the indigenous medicine of Central and South America, Native North American healing, the healing traditions of South Africa, traditional Chinese medicine, and Unani medicine of Eastern Europe.

Whether you're a health care professional or simply someone who wishes to explore the various traditions that can maximize health and wellness, this program will give you a solid foundation in a variety of traditional healing practices and techniques.

Certificate in Healing Environments for Body, Mind, and Spirit

(16 contact hours) The design of a health care facility can contribute greatly to the well-being of patients, staff, and the wider community. In this innovative certificate program, you'll examine how Optimal Healing Environments (OHEs) impact the health of individuals and communities on a physical, social, psychological, and spiritual level.

You'll learn how evidence-based design can create environments that foster healing and support the mission of health care facilities. You'll explore the effect of all the elements of an environment, including color, light, sound, and art, and the role they play in supporting physical and emotional health. In addition, the program examines how a facility can use a focus on nature to create a sense of connection, how to benefit from the use of technology while mitigating the emotional stress that can result from it, and the importance of such environmental aspects as clean air and water.

By the end of this program, you'll appreciate all aspects of a healing environment and be able to describe multiple methods of enhancing personal and work environments so that they support the health of individuals and surrounding communities in a sustainable, healing manner.

Certificate in Infectious Diseases and Infection Control

(13 contact hours) Infectious diseases are a key concern for any healthcare professional. Globally, infectious diseases are responsible for more than 25% of all deaths, second only to cardiovascular disease. Millions more individuals are affected by the most common types of infectious diseases, which can have both short- and long-term health consequences.

This certificate program offers insights into infectious diseases that are essential for medical professionals. The program begins by examining basic techniques and procedures for preventing the transmission of infectious disease. Then you'll take a closer look at some of the most common and dangerous infectious diseases: influenza, pneumonia, tuberculosis, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, zoonoses (diseases that are spread from pets to people), and tickborne diseases.

The program concludes with an examination of emerging global infectious diseases (EIDs), which threaten individuals, families, and communities throughout the developing world. By the end of this program, you'll have a solid understanding of the most common infectious diseases as well as a grasp of the procedures that can help contain them.

Calendar Sep 30, 2024

Around 30% of students in sixth grade already have trouble with basic reading and writing. These literacy problems affect performance across subject areas, and they often leave teachers wondering how to help. In this course, you will examine the reasons reading and writing are so difficult for students. Then you will encounter the total literacy framework and see what it does to mitigate literacy problems. Since this framework is based on guided reading lessons that flow naturally into writing challenges, you will learn to successfully transition from guided readings to writing lessons.

Once you have encountered the basic framework, you will investigate a number of ways to modify this basic recipe for a variety of K-12 circumstances, wrapping up with a look at good writing habits and the traits of a productive writing conference. If you're looking for the right way to get students excited about the power of literacy, this is the course for you!
