Calendar Jan 23, 2024 at 5:30 pm, runs for 15 weeks

The Life Skills course focuses on the students ability to demonstrate an understanding of the factors that enhance and undermine self‐esteem and of how self‐esteem affects their behavior. A goal of the course is to  enhance every students’ self‐image and strengthen their sense of self‐worth, become more aware of their strengths and plan to work on their weaknesses..Each student will come to  the ability to identify, prioritize,  and list personal needs, and to demonstrate the capacity to use coping, social, and cognitive skills to handle dilemmas. Students will be supported in the use of self‐awareness skills to identify personal qualities and to develop action competencies and produce a personal plan, related to eating and fitness for an active lifestyle and to build individual capacity to make healthy eating choices to reduce the risk of developing lifestyle diseases.

In order to achieve the above goals, classes in the various subjects will be taught at the appropriate level. Using math, geography, arts and graphs, history, science and practice with vocabulary, the students will  come to feel accomplished, bringing up each student's self-esteem.

An example of using math would include a lesson on community helpers such as firemen. The students are taught to use calculators to complete simple math. For example when 2 -1=1, the student looks at a color chart which indicates a particular color for the area that the math problem was written in and then he/she proceeds to collar that area. The same technique is used later in the semester when the students find the answer to a math problem , locate the number on a farm scene and use watercolors to paint the scene. This activity culminates in a lesson on Maine geography.
