Spring is blooming! Please join us as we visit the Botanical Gardens in Boothbay! Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is a people’s garden, a grassroots effort that began as a casual conversation between friends and evolved into the largest botanical garden in New England. Located on more than 300 acres along the MidCoast, the Gardens is a true Maine experience. Explore all the gardens have to offer:

What’s in bloom in May? Narcissus (daffodils) add their bright, colorful blooms throughout the Gardens. Hellebores still put on a show. Additional bulbs such as Hyacinthus, Muscari, and Chionodoxa are also painting the ground with shades of pink, blue, yellow, and white. Be sure to check out the soft yellow flowers of Corylopsis glabrescens ‘Longwood Chimes’ in the Alfond Children’s Garden; they smell really yummy! And many small leaved rhododendrons are in bloom in the Giles Rhododendron and Perennial Garden.

Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a water bottle, sunblock never hurts! Pathways in the central gardens are all ADA compliant, and ramps are available anywhere there are stairs. The Lerner Garden of the Five Senses features sensory-stimulating plants and areas dedicated to each of the five senses. They supply wheelchairs and scooters on a first-come, first-served basis. Shuttle Stops - Free 10-passenger shuttles offer service around the perimeter of the Gardens. They run every 20-25 minutes, with numerous hop-on, hop-off stops—guests should be aware that there is still walking required between shuttle stops and nearby destinations. We try to accommodate as many guests as possible, but the shuttle does get busy during high-traffic periods.

After our visit, we’ll head to the Tugboat Inn in Boothbay Harbor for a late lunch! Tugboat Inn’s waterfront Boothbay Harbor restaurant is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. It was built around the original superstructure of the historic tugboat “Maine.” Don’t forget to climb up and visit the original wheelhouse.

Join the Registered Maine Guides at Sebago Trails for an on-the-water adventure. This two-hour course will begin with a safety briefing and lesson covering the fundamentals of recreational kayaking. Using the EZ launching system at Sebago Trails Paddling, the tour will explore the water-carved bends and twists of a meandering stream unveiling local wildlife in a rustic backdrop. Then continue onto Jordan Bay of Sebago Lake as the guides share stories dating back to the settlements of the region. Come for the beautiful lake views and leave with your new favorite hobby! This is a great experience for anyone looking to get outdoors. Perfect for first time kayakers and experienced kayaking enthusiasts. A kayak, paddle and life jacket will be provided. Co-owners of Sebago Trails Paddling Company, Bill and daughter Katelyn, have over 30 years of paddling experience and instruction between them. Scarborough's Dunstan Cemetery holds a great collection of early 1800s slate grave markers from the shop of our region's first stonecutter, Bartlett Adams. Additional interesting monuments in marble and zinc, plus a few surprises, can also be found. You'll see what the best that Dunstan has to offer on this guided walk with cemetery historian and author Ron Romano. This walk is on even ground, but wear comfortable shoes as we will stroll the cemetery for about an hour. Held rain or shine, unless there is extreme weather. Maximum 20 participants per tour. Parking information will be shared before the walk. 

Come feast on the wild abundance of spring!  We will spend the day on identification, wise harvest, and cooking of multiple wild plants that grace the springtime table.  Ever eat a tree-leaf salad, nettle stir-fry or knotweed pie?  Come learn how and see how partnering with the wild can bring health, happiness, and hope.  We will provide a mostly-foraged lunch.

The Brown Family or their caretakers owned Valley Lodge for 181 years until 1973. Brothers David and Ephraim Brown came to Flintstown (now Baldwin) with their father, Captain David Brown, from Concord, Massachusetts, in 1783. Captain David Brown helped lay out the plot plan and worked on the roads in Flintstown. He never lived in Maine, but his son Ephraim built Valley Lodge. Ephraim's brother David built Saddle Back Farm (now gone) right above Valley Lodge. Ephraim had seven children who all lived to be adults. Thus, in the early 1800s, he added to the original cape by building a Federal Colonial over the front half of the cape. However, none of the early features of the cape were disturbed. It is possible to see the evolution of architectural styles from the mantels. From pre-revolutionary to the late Victorian periods, 95% of the original features are still present. Valley Lodge was featured in the April 2011 issue of Early American Life; a copy is at the Brown Memorial Library. Valley Lodge is located at 67 E. Saddleback Road, West Baldwin. Take Brown Road, which goes up behind Limington Lumber on Route 113. Take the first right, which is E. Saddleback. Valley Lodge is the first house. Please note: There is no charge for this tour. The $5 registration fee will be donated to the Baldwin Historical Society. If you would like to contribute other funds to the historical society, you may do so at  the time of the tour. Pre-registration is required due to spacing and safety issues. Extra sessions will be available as needed.
