Tech Spot

The Tech Spot is a School and Community Project located at the Renaissance Center (60 Water Street in Skowhegan). Under the supervision of an adult education instructor and other volunteer teachers, local students offer technology advice and tutoring at no charge to adults from throughout our school district. Individual and small group sessions are available by reservation or walk-in. Examples of possible help sessions include: general computer operation, preparing resumes, completing online job applications, conducting web searches, using Facebook and other social media programs, and operating Smart phones, iPads, Tablets, and PCs. Assistance is also available for creative software applications including basic iPhoto, & iMovie. Help with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) is available as well.

Introduction to MS Excel

Microsoft Excel is a software program that is part of the Microsoft Office suite. You can use Excel to enter, organize, and format all sorts of data and create formulas that will perform calculations for you.

The instructor will hold an online class every Tuesday from 5:30 - 6:30 pm to provide weekly demonstrations of skills and tasks in Excel, then students will have access to an online simulation that includes labs and videos to practice using Microsoft Excel. Students do not need the Excel application on their own computer. The instructor will be available during the week to answer questions about the videos and labs and provide assistance where needed. 

In this introduction to Excel class, you will learn how to do the following:

  • Navigate the tabs, ribbons, and groups
  • Adjust the column widths and row height
  • Organize data in columns and rows
  • Apply different number formats for dates, costs, percentages, etc. 
  • Format cells for data like phone numbers, zip codes, and social security numbers
  • Create formulas for calculations like totals, averages, and other basic calculations
  • Sort and filter data
  • And so much more
