Illustration Workshop for Astronauts—Undersketching in Pencil, Rendering in Pen & Ink

$165 Originally: $69

with Ed Higgins, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education

Calendar Dec 13, 2024 at 9 am, runs for 10 weeks

In this class you will take your ideas from rough pencil sketches to finished pen and ink drawings using traditional illustration techniques described in the 60th edition of “Rendering in Pen and Ink” by Arthur Guptil, which is the required textbook for this class (Be sure to buy it used!). Instructor Ed Higgins is fond of getting the “fussy” out of traditionally fussy media, believing that a healthy dose of subversive experimentation can bring new life to this old school medium in a way that’s fun and exciting. Bringing fine art sensibilities into a medium that is often dismissed as production or commercial, will help you stretch your artistic horizons and enrich your personal drawing style. We’ll be using real pens, paper and ink for this introductory class, but some practical discussion of what’s involved in taking your old school pen and ink work to the digital world for editing and reproduction. If you have never taken a sketching course with Ed, contact him prior to signing up so you know what to expect. *No Class: 12/27, 1/3, 2/21. **Special note about art materials: Please do not call our office about materials. Come to the first class with your favorite sketchbook and drawing pencils & pens. Suggested materials will be discussed by the instructor on the first day of classes. Thank you.

Portrait Drawing Studio

$165 Originally: $69

with Ed Higgins, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education

Calendar Dec 13, 2024 at 1 pm, runs for 10 weeks

So many of Ed Higgins’ portrait students have come so far, and are now doing amazing work. Here is an opportunity to take your own journey into drawing the human head and face, alongside others in an atelier-style studio class where you learn in an encouraging and constructive environment, with individual coaching from the instructor, and advice and inspiration from continuing students. Ed doesn’t believe in separating beginners from more advanced students. Everyone has the same bad habits to break, and being around people who have been through what you’re going through really does help. In this installment of the portrait class, you’ll continue to learn about the head from Moe, Larry and Curly (our resident skulls), and this term we’ll be drawing each other from life, more than working from reference photos. We hope to have a few guest models drop in as well. We will use a variety of media such as Pencil, Charcoal, and Conté crayons. Open to previous portrait students, but new students are welcome. *No Class: 12/27, 1/3, 2/21.
