Hike, snowshoe, geocache, hunt, and enjoy the woods and fields of Maine with confidence that you can read a topographic map, understand the symbols, know which way a river flows, plot a course bearing, use online resources, and how to get to safety. Familiarization to using a compass and map outdoors included. Students must have a DeLorme Maine Gazetteer, and a 2-degree baseplate compass. Zoom class – two nights, 5:30 – 8:30pm. April 1 & 8, 2024

Cooking for Beginners-Not Your Grandmother’s Meatloaf Dinner

In this session, you’ll learn how to prepare a tender, juicy, meatloaf full of flavor, served with mashed potatoes and broccoli. 

Learn how to use onions, garlic, herbs, and spices to flavor a meatloaf to perfection. You’ll also learn the different techniques to mash potatoes and how to shock vegetables. In addition, learn how to juggle food preparation so your meal components are all ready at the same time. Handouts, recipes and links will be provided.  This is an in-person class

Fencing for Adults

Come learn the Olympic sport of fencing! Instruction will cover stance, footwork, bladework drills, and bouting. All levels are welcome to participate, with a focus on beginners. All equipment will be provided throughout the session. NOTE: A protective chest/breast plate will need to be purchased separately. This is a personal gear item that you must purchase on your own to keep at home and bring to class (approx. $30). Figure Drawing (Apr/Online)

This course introduces students to the techniques and methods of the depiction of the human figure through direct observational drawing.

We will be working from models online to investigate movement, volume, and anatomy of the human form. We will learn perspective to draw the figure in space. Students will practice with a variety of subjects such as themselves, people with whom they live, family members, or pets. Students will be given assignments and documents such as illustrations of anatomy, references to art history and artists’ works.  This is a live online class using ZOOM. 

Makeup class, if needed, 06/03/24.

For supplies we will use large drawing pads, pencils, pens and charcoal.

France Hilbert has taught classes at College of the Atlantic since 2018. She is a professional artist and art educator with an extensive resume of training and experience including major commissions and installations. Her artistic education began at the age of seven, when she was taught by her grandfather, the late artist Jaro Hilbert. From him, she received a thorough education in the classical tradition. She pursued her formal education at the National Fine Art Academy of Paris, France, (ENSBA), was an artist in residence in Copenhagen, studied German Expressionism in Berlin, and traveled extensively to paint and study around Europe and abroad. At the Art Students League of New York, she received a Merit Scholarship to master portraiture in painting and completed a Certificate in Sculpture. She was selected for “Model to Monument”, a sculpture program at The Academy of Art, Newington Cropsey Foundation, Hastings on Hudson, NY and received an Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant from the Art Students League of New York. Of her many public and private commissions, some are permanent installations. “Talma”, a 7-foot bronze sculpture is installed in the public square of the Theatre of the Valley of L’Yerres, in Brunoy, France. A pair of 4-foot bronze relief sculptures entitled ”The Calling” are installed at the Georgetown University Medical School building in Washington, DC.

The First Aid class includes: medical emergencies, bleeding that you can see, bleeding you cannot see, treating for shock, and how and when to call emergency services. The course cost includes a blend of PowerPoint and video, instructor and practical components, and a certificate of completion. This class is taught to the standards established by the American Heart Association. The workbook is not included in this class. If you would like a workbook, please indicate on your registration form (one workbook covers CPR and first aid). Cost is $10 for the book.

Intermediate Microsoft Excel

Excel, Microsoft’s powerful spreadsheet software, is the most widely used program to handle the task of managing, storing and organizing information. In fact, most workplaces require their employees to know how to use Excel. This four-week course will expand on the basics, covering advanced and conditional formatting, data forms, pivot tables, charting, advanced functions, macros, mail merge and more. Each consecutive class will begin with a brief review and summary of the previous class.

About Alan: Alan has worked in the Information Technology field for over 35 years with several major corporations and is highly experienced in using and teaching beginner and advanced classes in all Microsoft Office applications, including Excel. He holds a BS degree in Computer Information Systems from Bryant University as well as an MBA from Providence College.
