Drawing Fundamentals
with Michael Branca, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education
Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to brush up on previous skills, this is the drawing class for you. Working in a variety of media, we will cover all of the basics: line, shape, value, proportion, composition, perspective and markmaking. Particular focus is placed on observational skills, learning how to translate the 3-dimensional world onto a 2-dimensional surface. A materials list will be provided after registration. *This session is 6 weeks.
Paint Night: Baltimore Oriole
with Shirley Anderson, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education
Join us for an evening of painting, where we will focus on the Baltimore Oriole, a bright bird species known for nesting here in New England. In this class we will learn to paint the bird’s distinctive bright orange and black plumage. No painting experience needed, Shirley Anderson will guide you step by step. Canvas and paints are supplied.
Memory Vessel Mosaic

In this fun 3D mosaic class we will cover an old flower pot, jar, vase or other surface of your choosing with bits of broken china, buttons, pebbles, shells or any other waterproof doodads you like! Tools will be provided for in class use. Please bring your own mosaicable surface (ie. the pot, vase etc.) and any personal items you wish to include. Some glass and ceramics will also be available in class. A material fee to cover glue and grout of $20 must be paid to the instructor on the first night of class.
Painting the Landscape: Water

In this class, open to all levels, students will learn to paint water from placid ponds to splashing waves. We’ll study wave structure, reflections, transparency, and color. Open to all paint mediums. Upon registration a simple list of materials will be sent out.
Introduction to Wood Carving: Chopsticks
with Zack Rouda, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education
Gain a comprehensive overview of woodcarving knives and learn how to use them. Practice using metal and stone knives to carve some basic eating implements from wood: fine chopsticks and/or a jam spreader. Next, try to make a spinning top! We’ll cover safety, techniques, good form, and various basic carving projects. *Program includes all required tools and materials.
Mushroom Walk
with David Spahr, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education
Join seasoned forager David Spahr on an immersive mushroom hunt, exploring habitats, structures, and safe foraging practices. Uncover surprises in each walk, shaped by season and location. Suitable for all ages (8-15 with a registered parent), this moderate-difficulty hike promises an exciting, educational adventure. Supply List: Notebook and pen to take notes, sensible clothing and footwear, water, snack and bug repellant. A basket or bags are optional. NOTE: This class will start with an outdoor talk at the waterfront followed by the walking portion.
Fishing Adventure Camp

Are you ready to go fishing? Merrymeeting FISHING ADVENTURE CAMP is a full 3-day freshwater fishing program for beginner or experienced anglers, grades 3 to 6. It is fun, safe and educational. Lifelong fisherman and college professor Martin Samelson will be there to identify target species (Bass, Trout, Sunfish, Pickerel and Perch), help anglers match their bait and tackle to their target species, and encourage ''Catch & Release" fishing to be mindful of Maine's natural marine resources. Info sheet regarding equipment/materials will be provided. *Pickup & Drop-off will be at pre-determined fishing spots. You will receive directions to the fishing spots closer to the camp dates. Schedule: Tues-Thur, 7/14, 7/15, 7/16 (Rain date: 7/17).
Entertaining with Maine Ingredients: Mocktail Mixology
with Maine Tasting Center, Merrymeeting Community & Adult Education
Explore Maine-made syrups, shrubs, infusions, and more while learning to craft beautiful, non-alcoholic mocktails. This hands-on class introduces local ingredients, creative techniques, and mixology tips, then gives you a chance to get hands-on with a few special recipes. All recipes and materials provided. Presented by Sara Gross of Maine Tasting Center.
