Do you go to weddings, family and school reunions or planning a cruise and would like to participate when dancing is offered? Maybe you participated in the past and feel a bit rusty with certain dance moves? How about learning basic foxtrot, waltz, and swing (jitterbug) moves and enjoy getting your groove back. Also dance has additional benefits related to active aging such as improving posture, balance, and cognition. Come with a dance partner or solo. American Tango: The Tango came to America in the last century and has been featured in many memorable movies. The dance is smooth, slow and slinky with open positions, fans, and dips. It progresses around the dance floor and uses catlike walks and staccato foot movements. West Coast Swing: This dance consists of six and eight count patterns, which are done in a slot. This dance is usually done to medium tempo swing music, frequently slower than East Coast swing. However, those who achieve a high skill level in this dance can and do dance it to faster tempo music. This dance has no bounce and a very smooth feel. *No Class: 1/20 & 2/17.

If you have painted in watercolors before and want to jump to the next level while painting with a supportive group to go deeper into your work, we will paint and discuss the works developed in the class to ask questions and share thoughts. Composition, value study, and texture will be discussed. This class will include painting from references of places you love, some still life work from your own keepsakes, and perhaps painting outside when the weather permits. This is an in-person class; makeup class, if needed, 01/28/25.

Mary Laury served as the founding Executive Director of Schoodic Arts for All, an award-winning non-profit organization celebrating the arts and culture in Downeast Maine for over 20 years. The botanical subjects and dynamic nature of Maine are Mary's passions. An experienced teacher, she has taught painting and drawing in classrooms and in the field for many programs throughout her career, and has been recognized for her work by the Maine Arts Commission. 

Working primarily in graphite and other drawing media, we will come together in 2 ½-hour, mid-day meetings to explore line, form, tonal value, seeing skills, abstraction, mark making - all and any aspect of the simple yet rich medium of drawing. The pace will be relaxed. Participants will be expected to bring work in progress for sharing, and continued drawing. The group will determine the direction for our focus after the initial meeting. The instructor will provide resources and offer demos. Demos can be one on one, small group or whole group depending on the interests of the “drawing room collective”. Suggested for any level of skill or experience. We will all share our interests in a supportive and energizing studio atmosphere. Suggested materials list:Graphite 2b (can be a yellow school Dixon Ticonderoga, or a Mirrado Black Warrior) 9b (solid graphite stick); several white plastic erasers such as Mars Staedtler (optional, thin white plastic eraser in a pen style holder- thinest diameter); Fine Natural Artist Chamois for creating a smooth ground (find at Dick Blick); Paper - the very best, Arches Watercolor, Hotpress - Arches is a tough paper with a smooth surface that can stand multiple erasures. It holds blacks beautifully, and you can create smooth gradations on it. Other papers can be used at lower cost depending on how much revisioning and reworking of your drawing is desired.

So, if you have been frustrated with other classes, consider taking this refreshing and informative computer class for older adults! You won’t be disappointed!
