Garment Sewing Class

Whether you’re new to garment construction or have dabbled in it before, you will gain the essential knowledge and skills to embark on your sewing journey with confidence. You will: Master essential techniques: measuring and cutting fabric, sewing straight and curved seams, creating hems, and attaching buttons and zippers.Master essential techniques: measuring and cutting fabric, sewing straight and curved seams, creating hems, and attaching buttons and zippers. Learn how to read and follow patterns. Learn troubleshooting to solve common sewing challenges. Learn finishing techniques to give your garments a polished, professional look. Basic sewing machine experience is required. Take Intro to Sewing at Factory 3 if you need an intro! SUPPLIES: All fabric will be provided. All tools will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own sewing gauge, ruler, thread cutters, fabric scissors, or chalk.

Intro to Bridgeport Milling Machine

This four-hour class will cover safe and proper setup of the Bridgeport milling machine through lecture and hands-on demonstrations. The course is designed for new users who have a strong interest in metalworking tools. We will first teach how to install and remove tooling, set up and use vises, and select and change spindle speeds. We will then teach the basics of operating the tool, including end mills and slot milling, conventional and climb milling operations, use of an edge finder, and hole spotting and boring.

Farmer’s Market Basket

This is an in-person, classroom-based course at Mount Desert Island High School.

Here is a basket that you can take to the market to grab your fresh produce and bakery items. Everyone is welcome to join this class. If you have never weaved before I will be doing step by step directions. You will walk away with a finished basket.

This basket will have two straps that can be worn on the shoulder or carried. Multiple color options on strap. The material of the basket is flat and half round quality reed. We will also add color reed in the basket if desired from blue, purple, red, green, and brown.

Wood Thrush Wilderness is an outdoor guiding and educational business that helps people connect more deeply with themselves and the natural world. As Licensed Recreation Maine Guides, we offer guided canoe expeditions throughout the state of Maine. We also offer classes and training in outdoor education, wilderness medicine, and traditional crafts such as basketry. 

To ensure adequate number of students and to gauge material requirements, registrations will close on May 20.

Pickleball Taster Section 4

Is Pickleball for you? Join us for the basics for those new to the game and absolute beginners. Learn the rules of scoring, court basics, the non-volley zone, common terms, faults, hot tips, and serving–the most significant difference from tennis.

Registration closes 4/2; no refunds, credits, or transfers after registration closes or if class runs on scheduled rain date.

Students will be notified, via text, of weather postponements the morning of class. Rain date 4/13.

Bring a pickleball paddle, 2 balls marked with your name (approx. $15-$40 on Amazon), and water. Wear weather-appropriate activewear, tennis shoes.

Intro to Cyanotype Prints

In this daytime workshop, where we need the sun to develop the print, you will learn to use fabric squares that are pre-treated with cyanotype chemistry to make your own cyanotype patch. After developing your cyanotype in the sun, rinsing and drying it, we will have needles and thread available for you to use to sew your 5” x 5” patch onto a clothing piece or bag of your choice if you wish.

Pickleball Specialty Shots Section 2

Practicing the basic strokes of pickleball keeps your game consistent, but one of the more fun things to do is to try out new shots. Strokes allow you to apply action to the ball, whereas a shot is more specific and happens after you have made a stroke. Get an intro to a variety of shots, including block, dink, lob, and volley. Serve and return of serve will also be covered. To have the best experience in this class, players are encouraged to have taken a Pickleball Taster course or played at the beginner level.

Woodworking Project: Wall Shelf

Learn basic woodworking techniques, with both hand and machine tools, to make a small wall shelf designed to be hung on a French cleat. We’ll cover the design’s joinery and how, with modifications, a standing shelf or cabinet could be made, for decorative or utility use. All materials will be provided.
