English Focus

Whether preparing for the HiSET exam, earning credits toward an adult education diploma, or preparing for college and a career, students will learn the fundamentals of writing, reading, and mechanics. Classes are done at the student's pace, with targeted instruction. Multiple texts will be used, with a variety of reading selections. Students work in a "lab" like setting, focusing on individual work with help from the instructor. This is intended for all levels of learners.

HiSET (High School Equivalency Test)

The HiSET is a series of five tests: reading, writing, math, science and social studies. Passing all five tests shows that you have the skills and knowledge expected of high school graduates. Your HiSET degree will open doors for work and college.
Meet with a student adviser and plan for classes or tutoring to prepare for the tests. HiSET is a self-paced option to earning your high school credential.
HiSET classes are small group or 1:1 tutoring to help you prepare for the test success. Build essential academic skills while learning invaluable test taking tips.

HiSet is Maine’s general education development (GED) program. If you are an adult without a high school diploma, the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) program could be your route to improved career prospects, a college education and increased earnings potential. Adult diploma programs are central to the mission and tradition of Maine Adult Education. Get your diploma and be one step closer to achieving your life's goals! Our daytime learning center is open only by appointment due to Covid-19 restrictions, but we have an active tutoring program available via Zoom. HiSET Writing
with Brenda Hio-Hamdan, Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education
HiSet is Maine’s general education development (GED) program. In this 6-week Zoom course, you’ll learn how to write an essay for the HiSET Writing Test. The class will focus on organizing your ideas and providing supporting details in an argumentative essay. Grammar, punctuation, and writing mechanics will also be covered. There will be opportunities for revising and editing with other students. Learn how to write your best essay!

Whether preparing for the HiSET exam, earning credits towards an adult education diploma, or working on math skills for career advancement, students will work within an individualized program to improve knowledge of mathematical topics, ranging from basic mathematical literacy to algebra and geometry concepts.
Materials and pace will vary, depending on student needs.
