Alice Haiss Scholarship Fund
with RSU 54/MSAD 54 Adult and Community Education
Alice Haiss of Skowhegan worked as an adult education teacher for many years as part of the Somerset County Basic Skills Program. She was a literacy, basic skills, GED Preparation and English as a Second Language teacher at the program's Learning Center. She also taught GED Preparation, basic and life skills at the Somerset County Jail for years. During that period, she took part in a federal grant project called the Esteem Machine that combined the teaching of life skills with academic skills.
Haiss also worked for Educational Skills, Inc., where she facilitated Project Resiliency, and intervention program to prevent female juvenile offenders from being incarcerated at a youth correctional center. The program focused on the development of problem solving, communication, team-building, and self-esteem building.
This scholarship will benefit any adult education learners who are pursuing education or training in high demand, high skill, or high wage occupations.
Awards will be announced yearly at the Adult Education Graduation in June.

Asynchronous High School Math Fundamentals

Asynchronous High School Pre-Algebra
with Maynard Walton, Bangor Adult & Community Education
This is a self directed, self paced, high school Pre-algebra program, designed to prepare students for post secondary math. The curriculum is high school algebra 1, in the form of a College Algebra Prerequisite Review. One hundred thirty-six problems selected by community colleges as a comprehensive prerequisite. The Learning Center provides teacher support by appointment, via Zoom. A test is administered upon the completion of the review. Students receive an official transcript grade for high school algebra 1 upon completion. This course has open enrollment throughout the school year. Please complete the online registration form or call 941-6316 to schedule a registration/ math CASAS test appointment. A minimum Math CASAS score of 241 or above is required for enrollment.
Biology with Lab
with Learning Center Staff, Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education
For any and all students who are prepping for Nursing or Medical Laboratory Technology admissions review, this is an excellent opportunity to meet the admissions “Biology with lab” prerequisite. If you have been away from science courses for a while, this course is recommended to prep you for rigorous college science classes. Students who successfully complete this class will earn 1 high school credit. Spring semester.
