This course will focus on the essential skills of a successful college student. Highlighted topics include study skills, time management, decision-making strategies, financial literacy, career pathways exploration, and building the writing skills necessary for academic readiness. This class fulfills a required college graduation credit at both SMCC and CMCC.

UMA Rumford

Getting started in college is easier than you may think! UMA Rumford Center and Region 9 Adult Education are partners in your success. Don’t navigate the waters of college alone! At Region 9 we offer free academic support and preparation to get you moving in the right direction (FMI see the College Transitions section of this brochure).
Roz Hodge, the Student Services Coordinator for UMA’s Rumford Center will be at Region 9 Adult Education on the first Wednesday of every month from 3:30pm to 5:30pm to meet with prospective students. You can take a class or earn a degree right in Rumford, with multiple ways to complete classes: 100% online, live online in real time, or in person. In addition to classes, the center is available for studying, tutoring and advising.
Think you have to go into debt to go to college? Think again. Roz will share with you the many scholarships and programs that are available for students to take a class or complete a degree program with little or no expense!

Join Jessica Whittier, College Access Counselor with the Finance Authority of Maine for this 1-hour workshop as we talk all things paying for college.

College Transitions English
with Nate Berger, RSU 24 Adult Education

College Transitions English focuses on sharpening your writing and reading comprehension for college level courses. Develop writing skills necessary for short answer responses, essays, and research papers.
An emphasis is placed on the writing process: outlining, drafts, rewriting, and editing to a final copy. Fine tune your grammar and punctuation while developing your writing style and organization. Build your critical reading skills to pick out main ideas, arguments and common themes in college level readings.
Nate Berger also teaches college writing at UMA and ELL classes.

College Transitions Math & Technology
with To Be Announced, RSU 24 Adult Education

Get ready for college level math and technology. College Transitions Math & Tech. includes an intensive brush up of math skills with an introduction to College Algebra. Move from "I can't do math" to "I CAN do math!"
Additionally, you will build technology skills needed in college classes for formatting and editing papers, creating presentations, submitting work online, and using Brightspace - Maine's univeristy and community college online learning system.
Review fractions, decimals, percents, and basic algebra for college math. Learn to use online sources for supplementing your math knowledge. Practice math online, including preparing for the computerized assessments and exams. Gain an understanding of problem solving techniques and processes. Relieve your math anxiety, while gaining tech. skills!
