Personal injury law is a specialized area of litigation that calls for the right specialized training. Our Injury for Paralegals Course will prepare you to plan an integral role in every case from intake and pre-litigations to trial preparation and settlement. You will learn many of the legal terms, causes of action, and remedies available to victims of personal injury accidents. A review of the negligence theory of torts upon which many personal injury claims are based is provided. Students also will discuss interviewing, investigating and other case-building techniques vital to a personal injury paralegal’s success in the law office. Class discussions and lesson material will include the different kinds of personal injury claims, including (but not limited to) car accidents, slips and falls, medical negligence/malpractice, manufacturer product defects, and class-action lawsuits. Discover the basic categories of damages recovery, statutes of limitations, and schemes for liability.

Become a victim advocate for domestic violence shelters, crisis centers and hotlines, and to assist crime victims in the criminal justice system. Learn legal terminology, legal process, victims’ rights, jurisdiction and venue, ethics, effects on the victim, victim advocacy skills, guardianships and crisis intervention. Students enrolled in this certificate program complete a minimum of 130 hours of classroom, laboratory, and clinical training, meeting all state licensing requirements. Upon successful completion of the course and passage of the state competency exam, the student will be eligible to enter the healthcare field as a Certified Nursing Assistant under the direction of a licensed nurse. Class size is limited so applying early is advised. Funding opportunities are available through the Pen Bay Apprentice Program "Earn While You Learn", as well as several other community programs. Prerequisite: high school diploma or equivalent.

This course is designed to teach experienced CNAs how to administer selected injectable medications and non-injectable medications to patients 4 years and older under the on-site supervision of a licensed nurse. Potential students must be currently licensed CNAs, listed as “active” on the Maine CNA Registry, or have employer documentation of the equivalent of at least one year of full-time employment as a certified nursing assistant, provide two letters of recommendation from Registered Nurses, and achieve a qualifying reading score on our placement testing. Payment plans and financial assistance may be available to those who qualify.
