Headed off to college, but feeling a little uncertain of your writing skills?  Do you feel like you might be an okay reader but aren’t great at reading with purpose? Whether you’re looking to maintain the skills you had in high school, or you are looking to grow as a writer and/or reader, this virtual course is for you. We will be focusing on dissecting a writing prompt,  reading short stories, articles, and scholarly articles with purpose and synthesizing the information from the reading into strong essays. 

Topics include: development and support of a position, critical thinking, reading with purpose, synthesizing information

When: This course will begin Wednesday June 29th and will conclude Wednesday August 12th  (8 weeks) 4:00-5:15 

Materials needed: Access to a computer with wifi

In this college preparation class, you will get the feeling that you are in an actual online college course. With an online discussion forum, recorded lectures, weekly writings, and all digital materials the course will feel very similar to the common forums used by colleges and universities. This gives student’s the ability to practice and hone their online discussion skills in a supportive environment. The topics covered in this course will also work to prep students for their post-secondary adventures! The first and last class will be in person, with the other weeks being completely online. 

Topics include: career pathways, financial literacy, academic readiness, goal setting, study skills, and where college students go wrong! 

When: This course will begin Wednesday June 29th  and will conclude Wednesday August 12th (8 weeks)

Materials needed: Access to a computer with wifi

Will receive 1 college credits through CMCC or SMCC with the successful completion of this course (the equivalent to taking your First Year Seminar).

College Transitions are programs that allow a student who already possesses a high school diploma to brush up on skills in order to gain entrance into college. If you are having trouble passing college entrance exams, or the college has told you to take adult education classes to bring you up to entrance standards, you need the College Transitions program. There is NO fee for this program. We are working remotely over Zoom but also doing essential testing in-person and safely, with lots of support materials available.  Contact us today to get started!

This 7 week course will dive into the most important concepts in chemistry needed to succeed in a college chemistry classroom. Everything from particle diagrams to stoichiometry will be covered as students gradually develop a particulate model of how matter behaves by observing and interpreting experimental evidence. The course is designed to make learning chemistry easy and offers students individualized instruction, a variety of learning mediums, simplified concepts and even virtual labs all in a remote setting. Start building the foundation you need to enter medical and science majors with confidence and tools to succeed.Dates are Mondays and Thursdays 8:30-10:00am July 6-Aug 20.

WHERE:

This is a live face to face on-line class. Instructors are from York Adult Education and York County Community College.

 

WHAT:

Knowledge and skill development in digital literacy andIT support: including hardware and software troubleshooting, operating systems, and communication and procedure.

RESULT:

Completion of the Academy results in the industry approved CompTIA® A+ certification and prepares you for employment as a computer user support specialist/help desk technician. Participants will receive 3 YCCC credits.

 

Prerequisites:

- Resident of Maine

- Ages 17-29

- Unemployed or underemployed

- Proof of authorization to work in the U.S.

- Testing/Assessments required

A blended learning class combining face-to-face (or Zoom) classroom sessions with online learning assignments and interaction. This course will focus on the essential skills of a successful college student which will include study skills, time management, decision making strategies, financial literacy, career pathways exploration and academic readiness. This class fulfills Freshman Interest Group Seminar, a required college graduation credit, at both Central Maine Community College and Southern Maine Community Colleges.
