with Myriah Davis, Old Orchard Beach/Saco Adult Education

Calendar Nov 7, 2024 at 6 pm, runs for 6 weeks

If you already understand the basics of crochet, but want to take your skills to the next level, or just never knew how to decipher a pattern independently, then this is the course for you! Learn to read more complex patterns, get tips and tricks to work smarter not harder, and finish your projects with support every step of the way! Taught with both instruction and working time, students will have the opportunity to fine-tune their skills and build a friendship afghan using more advanced patterns and stitches. Choose a pattern, or provide your own, and Myriah will offer support in reading crochet shorthand and notes, choosing materials, making substitutions, and finishing projects with edging and borders.

Required: Bring a size H (5mm) crochet hook and sharp scissors to the first class. Other materials will be determined after choosing a pattern. No class 11/28.

NOTE: Day/date change (was Wednesdays, 10/30-12/18).

Myriah Davis, owner & operator of Davis Arts, a pop-culture-based art business, has more than 20 years of crochet experience. Her goal is to share her enthusiasm for all things yarn, but especially crochet, with everyone she meets.

Worm Composting for Beginners

$7 Originally: $0

with Jock Robie, Mainely Worm Bins, Mid-Maine Regional Adult Community Education

Calendar Nov 7, 2024 at 6 pm, runs for 1 week

The instructor will demonstrate and assist as beginners set up their own worm bins (limit five households – one worm bin per household.)

No limit on the number of individuals but they all need to be from the first 5 households to register. Everyone has to pay the registration fee (children are welcome and free) After the worm bins are assembled then the instructor will give his “Worm Talk.”

The talk covers the following subjects: What is Vermiculture and Worm Composting and how is it different from regular composting? Why do it? What are the benefits? What are the main things to consider before trying? What is important for worms to thrive? What are the main problems encountered and how to avoid (or remediate if necessary.)

The instructor takes contact information (phone numbers and email addresses) from each household and then stays in contact with them for a year or more until they reach a point of self-reliance. The instructor returns 3 to 4 months after the initial workshop to assist with the first harvest of each student's worm bin. All the alumni of the workshop gather for their “First Harvest”. They are sometimes joined by “senior alumni” that are there for their 2nd, 3rd…harvest.

First Harvest for this class is in 3 to 4 months: Tuesday, March 11, 2025, 6 to 8 PM
