In this four-week course, you can take your watercolor basics and shape a painting practice for yourself. Pursue your own themes and subjects under the guidance of a watercolor teacher. You will learn about composition, value and color theory and how to apply these skills to your own paintings. Class is open to those who have already taken either of Factory 3's watercolor classes, or who feel they have foundational skills in watercolor.

Intro to Cyanotype Prints

In this daytime workshop, where we need the sun to develop the print, you will learn to use fabric squares that are pre-treated with cyanotype chemistry to make your own cyanotype patch. After developing your cyanotype in the sun, rinsing and drying it, we will have needles and thread available for you to use to sew your 5” x 5” patch onto a clothing piece or bag of your choice if you wish.

Woodworking Project: Wall Shelf

Learn basic woodworking techniques, with both hand and machine tools, to make a small wall shelf designed to be hung on a French cleat. We’ll cover the design’s joinery and how, with modifications, a standing shelf or cabinet could be made, for decorative or utility use. All materials will be provided.

You will learn the fundamentals of working with acrylic paint by exploring the classical technique of still life painting. We will cover color theory, perspective, and composition while working from in-studio still life sets. Still life painting is the perfect subject matter for those who are just starting their journey in the acrylic medium, and for those who are looking to further develop their own style of painting.

Sewing Project Class: Palazzo Pants, Side Tie Top

Two projects will be made in this class. Palazzo pants - loose, wide-legged pants suitable for beginner and experienced sewists. Side tie top – a trendy top sewing pattern that is easy to construct and is perfect for beginners or experienced sewists.  In each session, you will learn how to read a pattern and pattern instructions, choosing and preparing fabric, learning about fabric grainline and pattern layout, cutting out the pattern, review of stitches, seams, seam allowances and seam finishes.  Basic familiarity with use of a sewing machine is required, such as what you can learn in our Intro to Sewing class. Details of what to bring to class will be provided after you sign up.

Hand Embroidery

In this two-day class, you’ll be provided expert instruction to start work on a full-color embroidery piece. If you’ve never threaded a needle, or are a beginner looking for a little guidance, we’ll go over how to use a hoop, select threads and fabrics, transfer a design to your fabric, use a variety of stitching techniques, and finish a hoop in a couple of different ways. A hoop and all needed tools and materials will be provided. Some homework is recommended, but not required, between sessions.
