Birch Bark Basket
with Jessica Steele, Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education
Learn how to make your own birch bark basket. We will take the time in class to learn about the traditional crafting techniques and create our own piece of art. We will go over how to identify and collect birch bark, the materials that will be used are natural and commonly used materials. We will go over tools to use for collection and for creating a basket. There are many designs and ways you can create a birch bark basket. We will go over a few different types and allow the students to be creative in making their own basket. All basket material must be prepared, and we will go through that process. We will also go over how to stitch and lash the bark together using sinew and discuss using spruce roots as well. This is a great opportunity to create something beautiful with natural resources. The course fee will cover all material, use of tools, and instruction.

Cooking Sourdough Bread 5.9.24
with Bill Babb, Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education
There is nothing like the aroma of freshly baked sourdough bread unless it is enjoying a slice of freshly baked bread with butter shortly after coming out of the oven! Students will learn how to care for a sourdough starter, how to knead using two different techniques, and how to mix, shape and score the bread for baking. The instructor will demonstrate two ways to bake a loaf, using a cloche or a stone with steam in the oven, followed by a taste testing. Students will then shape, score and bake a loaf of their own in class. They will take home some sourdough culture (bring a 32 ounce container) for bread baking at home. A $5 ingredients fee is payable to the instructor at class.
