This course will focus on the essential skills of a successful college student. Highlighted topics include study skills, time management, decision-making strategies, financial literacy, career pathways exploration, and building the writing skills necessary for academic readiness. This class fulfills the FIGS requirement. The course will run through Brightspace with live classes for the first and last class meetings.

Prerequisites: An Accuplacer score of 470 or higher is required OR CASAS score of 239 or higher is required.

Dates: In-person class Monday, 6/2/2025 and Zoom class Monday, 7/21/2025 from 5-8PM, all other classes are asynchronous.

Would you like to go to college but haven’t done math in years? Do you want to boost your Accuplacer score? This course covers pre-algebra and algebra basics including, operations with numerical and algebraic expressions, solving equations, applications of equations, graphing linear functions and data analysis. All materials will be provided by the instructor. Mandatory weekly Zoom sessions.

Prerequisites: Accuplacer score of 236 or lower is required (or to build confidence) OR CASAS score of 225-236 required (or to build confidence if higher).

In this reading and writing course, students will strengthen their understanding of the interconnected relationship between reading and writing for academic purposes. Students will apply their comprehension of paragraph mechanics to understand more complex, multiple-paragraph essays and analyze college-level writing across multiple genres. Students will gain digital literacy skills through working with online learning technology. At the completion of this course, students’ work will be analyzed to determine readiness for ENGL 080. 

Prerequisites: An Accuplacer score of 430-469 or CASAS score of 232-238 is required.

South Portland Adult Education offers ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes to South Portland residents free of charge. Classes are available in the morning, afternoon, and evening at three locations in South Portland. 

There is an enrollment process to join. 

 

All classes are full at this time. We are not enrolling new students.

The High School Equivalency Test (HiSET®) is a way for people who didn't finish high school to earn a diploma and get on track for college or a career. The exam has five parts: Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Writing.

The state of Maine uses HiSET® for high school equivalencies, not GED. Your HSE credential will be accepted by every state, territory and  jurisdiction, as well as by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. military, and federal programs. 

 

Eligibility

  • Age: You must be at least 17 years old. You must have withdrawn from high school to enroll in HiSET®.
  • Residency: You must provide a government issued photo ID and (if needed) one other form of identification with your  Maine address to prove you are a resident of Maine.  
  • Cost: The HiSET® program is free to Maine residents when taken through Maine Adult Education.
  • English Skills: Multilingual learners are eligible to enroll when they have a CASAS score of 239.

Students will gain digital literacy skills through working with online learning technology. At the completion of this course, students’ work will be analyzed to determine readiness for ENGL100.

Prerequisites: An Accuplacer score of 470 or higher is required OR CASAS score of 239 or higher is required.

In this reading and writing course, students will increase their facility with academic vocabulary and grammar using level-appropriate texts. Students will learn comprehension skills and strategies to recognize and understand various text genres. This course focuses on paragraph structure and organization in academic writing to prepare students with a foundational knowledge of college-level writing, while also building digital literacy skills through working with online learning technology. At the completion of this course, students’ work will be analyzed to determine readiness for SMCC's ENGL 040 course.

 

Prerequisites: CASAS GOALS score of 220-231, or a CASAS STEPS score of 217-234 is required.
