Reviving Civility: Building Bridges with Civil Dialogue

with League of Women Voters, Scarborough Adult Learning Center

New! 78% of Americans think incivility and political dysfunction are preventing our nation from moving forward. Conversely, we know that dialogue based in civility can uplift and energize, build collaboration, trust and understanding, and transform outcomes – whether in politics, in facilitating meetings, conversing with co-workers, communicating with your teen, or chatting with neighbors. Learn to avoid tendencies to vilify or demonize others with differing viewpoints by adopting skills of active listening, mutual respect and compassion, as well as effective consideration of all sides of an argument. At the same time, learn strategies to disagree and even critique, while still respecting and affirming all persons. This workshop will be led by two trained volunteer facilitators from the Portland Area League of Women Voters, a non-partisan, non-profit public policy educational organization empowering citizens to engage in the democratic process, by seeking positive solutions to issues through education and conflict resolution; LWV offers this as a free community service.
