This presentation takes a look at the early summer hotels and cottages in Scarborough that attracted tourists, the modes of transportation that brought visitors here, and the factors that caused their decline. During the Wilderness Movement in America in the late 19th century, many city dwellers in the northeast found they could escape the unclean water, dirty streets and polluted air of the nation’s large cities by vacationing in Maine.
