If you ever wanted to learn to use a sewing machine or know how to use one and would like to brush up on your sewing skills, then this class is for you. We start at the beginning, learning to thread your machine, winding a bobbin and to sew an accurate ¼ inch seam. You’ll make simple projects every week starting with an ugly potholder. You will build your skills and gain confidence while having fun and learning at your own pace. Move on to making your own pillowcase, using the “hot dog” method and learning a French seam. Please purchase your own fabric for pillowcases and have basic sewing supplies, needles, thread, scissors and a working sewing machine with manual. Instructor will provide material for all other projects. For those returning students or those that are comfortable with their machines, we will be creating more intricate projects, starting with an Origami Candle Mat. You will need to have a rotary cutter, cutting mat and rulers. Returning students will need to purchase all fabric for class. Instructor has a sewing machine available for use.

Please note: A $1.99 credit card processing fee will be added to the price of this class.

About Lori: Lori got started sewing because her daughter wanted a quilt when she was in kindergarten after she had heard a story about a quilt. She was 5 years old. She’s been sewing ever since, for over 15 years! Lori also loves being able to share her knowledge of sewing with beginners who are just starting out as well as others who are learning new tricks of the trade. “Teaching the correct way to use sewing machines to create clothing, display items used for decoration and practical items to use around the house or to give as gifts is such a rewarding experience.”

Spontaneous and hands-on, pastels are an excellent choice for plein air, illustrative and abstract work. Experiment with the hardest and softest pastels and a variety of pastel papers. Enjoy the benefits of weekly critiques. The instructor’s objective for you is to feel comfortable with this medium and develop a style of your own. Note: For first class bring a few colored pastels and pastel paper and Wade will go over what else is needed for remaining classes. Please do not buy supplies until you are notified that the class will run.

Please note: A $1.99 credit card processing fee will be added to the price of this class.

About Wade: Wade got his start doing corporate commissions from companies like Boston Duck Tours, Bank of America, McDonald’s, HBO, and Sesame Street Magazine, but it was his childrens' books that really nudged him out of his artistic comfort zone. Both Time Magazine and The New York Times cited his first book “Window Music” as best illustrated of 1998. Wade has illustrated eight picture books, each of which challenged him in different ways. He works exclusively in pastel; he is drawn to the intimacy of the chalk and the ease with which he can blend colors.
