Green Wood Spoon Carving

with Franklin County Adult Education
Join up-and-coming artisan craftsman and maker Grant Hawkes of Wildfolkwanderer for a weekend making beautiful wooden spoons and plenty of curly wood shavings! Spoons are one of the most universal tools of humanity, being crafted and used across the globe for thousands of years. In this course we will explore the details of spoon carving, diving fully into the process of transforming a freshly cut log into a functional and beautiful spoon using simple hand tools. We will cover tool use and care, wood selection, spoon design, carving techniques, and discussions on craft and the role it plays in our lives as we carve together. Over the weekend, each participant will have the opportunity to work on a couple different projects, completing the course with new skills and utensils to take home.
Date: August 3-4, 10:00 am Saturday to 4:00 pm Sunday

Willow Weaving Weekend

In this two day workshop you will make a round-base basket, otherwise known as stake-and-strand, traditional to much of Europe. Learn to make the slath, two-rod twining, staking up, 3-rod waling, French randing, a waled border, and handles of your choice. Take home a round-base basket to use for the rest of your life and the skills to make more.
The workshop is taught by Mary Lauren Fraser, who apprenticed with Karen Collins in northern Scotland. Mary has been weaving coffins for green burial and teaching basketry workshops throughout New England since 2015. Of Scottish heritage, she grew up and resides on the banks of the Connecticut River in today's western Massachusetts, on unceded Abenaki land.
Date: October 5-6, Saturday 10:00 am to Sunday 4:00 pm

Acorn Processing Day

Acorns: the amazing, bountiful, ancient staple of humanity! But did you ever try eating a raw acorn? Yuck! However, it just takes some simple processing to transform acorns into a truly delicious grain-like (and gluten free) food. This is real food; we eat hundreds of pounds a year. As part of this day we honor indigenous cultures that have enjoyed acorns for thousands of years, and we investigate the potential of acorn to transform modern food systems and culture. We'll begin the day with harvesting and end with baking!

BEHAVIOR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION TRAINING (BHP)

Looking for in meaningful work? Children’s behavioral health services are vital to Maine’s Children with intellectual disabilities, autism and mental health disorders and their families. As an integral part of the child’s treatment team, a Certified Behavioral Health Professional (BHP has the opportunity to make an immediate impact while helping a child grow and develop to their full potential. We are excited to connect our community with this wonderful ONLINE training and certificate program. Th s training will prepare you for employment through local social service agencies and equip you to work with children who qualify for services. This program can be started at any time and finished at your own pace. You will complete 12 online modules, then three 4-hour live (in-person sessions. Once the modules are completed, you will receive free online blood borne pathogen training and Child and Adult First Aid & CPR Certification. In just 40 hours, our free remote training program can get you certified and on your way to a life changing profession. Must be a Maine resident, and at least 18 years old with a high school diploma (or equivalent to become certified. State Approved Certified Medical Technician Program. Includes: 60 hours classroom, 20 hours classroom/lab, and 40 hours clinical training. Th s is a 120 hour course preparing CNA’s working in nursing homes to administer medications under the supervision of an RN (this 40 hour piece should be scheduled at the facility, by the facility, and a schedule provided to the instructor.) PREREQUISITE: CNA license +2080 hours as a CNA. Call the Adult Ed Office at 778-3460 for an application and detailed registration requirements. Assessments required.

CPR - First Aid

The purpose of the courses in the First Aid/CPR/AED program is to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.
