America's Boating Course Spring 2019

$41

with Dan Seneca, Piscataquis Valley Adult Education Cooperative

Calendar Feb 19, 2019 at 6:30 pm

The basic four-evening (8 hour + exam) course is designed to familiarize the student with the fundamentals of safe boating and to qualify for certification in most states that require boating education before operating a watercraft. Coverage includes safety equipment, trip planning, navigation rules and aids, state and federal regulations, anchoring, dealing with adverse conditions and emergencies, communications, trailering, and knots and lines. The information is useful for users of all sorts of watercraft (power, sail, paddle) and for both ocean and freshwater boating. This course includes an examination. An optional Part II course extension (2 weeks, four hours) introduces students to navigation and the use of charts - important information on determining where you are and how to go where you wish to go safely. Part II requires no homework or exam. The cost of the course is $10 plus $26 for the student manual (which may be shared). Students who wish to continue through Part II may wish to purchase a course plotter for $7.50 and dividers for $15 although these are not required. PVAEC charges $5 so the total cost for students (including the manual) is $41 (63.50 with plotter and dividers). Please bring pen and paper. Are you aware of the need for foster parents who can care for a child who has been removed from his or her parents' custody? Have you ever thought I would like to do that but I don't know where to begin? Or maybe you have many questions that you would like to ask but don't know whom to ask. Perhaps you are concerned about what is involved and fear it would be overwhelming for your family. This, then, is the session for you. This will be a candid discussion about the steps that are required to become a licensed foster parent and what can be expected once you start caring for children. CHCS will partner with applicants at the very beginning, assisting with the licensing process and supporting you once you begin to foster. You are never in this alone! At CHCS, we believe children deserve to be encouraged, loved, and coached to reach their potential. When parents are unavailable on a daily basis, it requires an invested community of adults who can step forward and offer those supports. Applicants for respite (part-time) as well as full time foster care are being sought as the number of children who need these supports exceeds the current available homes. In the words of a previous foster child who is now a motivational speaker, Josh Shipp, "Every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story." If you began 2019, resolving to become engaged in your community in a meaningful way, this may be a perfect opportunity to meet that goal. Stephanie Doore is a Licensed Social Worker who has been working with foster parents since 1993. The work of recruiting, developing and supporting foster parents in caring for their foster children has been one of Stephanie's greatest career passions. She has received both state and national awards for her work in foster care and was recently elected as the Chair of the Maine Chapter of the Family Focused Treatment Association.
