Build a Shaker Style Table

This class will cover building a small end table that is 30” high, and 16” square. The course is for beginner to experienced woodworkers. The student will make all components of the table using both power tools and hand tools. The project will include most of the procedures required in Basic Woodworking, including: tapering table legs, gluing up panels, cutting multiple parts and making mortise and tenon joints. All tools, safety glasses and hearing protection provided. A materials fee will be charged based on which type of wood the student chooses upon registration; Poplar (best if the project is to be painted) $100; or Oak - $150. Students will use the SawStop table saw that has the revolutionary new braking system which eliminates the chance of injuries from the blade. Because of this, a $50 refundable deposit will be required. The materials fee and refundable deposit are payable to the instructor the first day of class.

Instructor Rick Gallion has been a professional woodworker for over thirty years and has taught many students the craft of woodworking. His shop is designed as a teaching facility.

Bedrock and Glacial Geology of the Pemaquid Region

Explore the geology of our immediate area through two Saturday morning field trips each followed by a Monday evening class. From glacial sculpting and erratics to the primordial origins of the rock units, Mid-Coast Maine tells many geological stories.You will learn what the earth looks like in this area and how to unlock its secrets.

This quick course assumes an interest in rock and mineral identification, plate tectonics, bedrock geology and glacial geology all which will be presented in a local context. Maps, written text and on-line sources will be presented so the student can learn how to access the information. Suggested reading prior to class: “Geology of the Pemaquid Region, Mid-Coast Maine", 2015, by David M Pope. Available at Sherman’s Bookshop, Damariscotta; Treats of Wiscasset, and Ames Supply of Wiscasset.

David Pope grew up rockhounding in New Hampshire's White Mountains. He holds both an undergraduate and graduate degree in geology. He is the author of "Geology of the Pemaquid Region, Mid-Coast Maine".

Boat America

This is the course that meets Maine’s requirement for people born on or after January 1, 1999 to operate boats inland and coastal waters. Learn boating skills from experienced boaters who patrol midcoast coastal waters from Small Point to Port Clyde.

TOPICS INCLUDE: Introduction to Boating: types of power boats, boating terms, sailboats paddle boats, and engine types. Boating Laws: Boat registration, regulations, hull identification numbers, required safety equipment, Federal boating laws, state boating laws, and reporting accidents. Safety Equipment: life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment. Safe Operation and Navigation: buoys and beacons, aids to navigation, navigation rules, docking, and the dangers of alcohol on the water. Boating Emergencies: hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather. Trailering: types of trailers, lights, hitches, towing a trailer. Sports and Boating: water-skiing, hunting and hunting gear, personal watercraft operation, and other boating tips.

New Maine Boating Law: to operate a boat over 25 hp, on inland and coastal waters persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1999 must have taken an in-person Boat America course, pass an exam, have the state’s Boat America card, and be registered in the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife data base. Completing this course satisfies the requirements.

Pre-requisite: Previous Zentangle Intro class and/or familiarity with the Zentangle Method basics.

During this 5 week class, create a beautiful Compass Rose on a 10” x10” Opus Renaissance tile designed by Molly Hollibaugh, CZT. A process that explores working on a large size, ochre tile, exploration of ornate lettering and embellishments, and a dynamic collection of original Zentangle patterns.

As a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT), Martha Brooks finds great joy in sharing Zentangle with others! She is a retired Speech Pathologist who loves when people gather, the beauty found in the natural world around us, and rescuing greyhounds. She has found great contentment as she settles into life on the midcoast of Maine!

The instructorn will present proven writing prompts and techniques to tickle your muse and coax even the most hesitant voice onto the page.

Elizabeth Potter is a teacher and poet residing in Midcoast Maine. Her poems have been widely published in literary journals both locally and nationally. Elizabeth has been leading creative writing workshops for all ages for the past twenty-one years.

Creative Writing Generative All Genres Session 3

Spend Monday mornings writing in a small group via Zoom. Bring works-in-progress or begin new work in any genre. Generative theme-based prompts are offered as optional, and each class includes 30 minutes of quiet writing time. You may choose to read your work aloud and feedback will be carefully guided so that writers hear what others found meaningful, evocative, interesting, exciting, and enchanting.

Diana Mullins is a writer and editor who has taught writing workshops for three decades. She is an expert on feedback and revision techniques, and has advanced degrees in education. Her creative writing has been published in literary journals.
