Literacy
HiSET Social Studies (GED)

You don't have to be a history expert to pass the HiSET Social Studies test. Our classes helps you build knowledge around these key areas for the Social Studies test: History, Civics/Government, Economics, and Geography.
Using in class discussion, reading materials, videos, cartoons, graphs, and online options, you'll cover the material for the HiSET Social Studies test.
You will review, learn, and discover new information and ways people have engaged in their communities through the generations.
All of our HiSET classes also include test taking strategies to help you relieve any test anxiety and build confidence in your test taking skills.
A few more details about the HiSET Social Studies test:
The test is 70 minutes with 60 multiple choice questions.
You can take the test on the computer or on paper.
You can take the test up to three times in one calendar year.
There is no cost for taking the HiSET tests in Maine if you are a Maine resident.
English Exploration
with Sadie Lake, RSU #13 Adult and Community Education
This family-friendly class aims to explore the English language through culture and media. Students interact with English through an artistic, creative lens, focusing mainly on producing their own projects based on what they have learned. There will be a mixed media format where students will have the chance to learn English through film, music, books, and more. For the best experience, this class is recommended for students of the intermediate level and above.
ELL Advanced – English Exam Preparation
with Sadie Lake, RSU #13 Adult and Community Education
This class is designed for someone who is preparing for college, a professional career, or preparing to take the TOEFL exam. Focus on academic vocabulary, develop writing and communication skills, and improve your test taking skills.
This class has in-person, remote, and hybrid options.
ELL Intermediate to Advanced Conversation
with Martin Feracci, RSU #13 Adult and Community Education
Class In this class for intermediate to advanced English speakers (CASAS Level B and up) we discuss current events, holidays, and American culture. Practice your listening, reading, speaking and pronunciation skills.
In-person at McLain School or remotely via video conference.

Fundamentals of English
with Elizabeth DiLalla, RSU #13 Adult and Community Education
Start learning English at the very beginning. Learn English vocabulary, grammar structure, and pronunciation in this class for students who don’t speak any English yet!
This class meets in person at the McLain School (28 Lincoln St., Rockland) in the 2nd Floor Computer Lab
Reading Fundamentals
with Joan Halloway, York Adult Education
This course is designed to build essential reading skills, focusing on the core components of phonics, sight vocabulary, and fluency. Recognizing the challenges many students face with reading multisyllabic words, the curriculum also includes targeted instruction on spelling, affixes, and root words. Students will receive comprehensive support to enhance their ability to decode and understand complex words, paving the way for improved reading proficiency and confidence.
