Whether preparing for the HiSET exam, earning credits toward an adult education diploma, or preparing for college and a career, students will learn the fundamentals of writing, reading, and mechanics.  Classes are done at the student's pace, with targeted instruction.  Multiple texts will be used, with a variety of reading selections.  Students work in a "lab" like setting, focusing on individual work with help from the instructor.  This is intended for all levels of learners. 

HiSET (High School Equivalency Test)

The HiSET is a series of five tests: reading, writing, math, science and social studies. Passing all five tests shows that you have the skills and knowledge expected of high school graduates. Your HiSET degree will open doors for work and college. 

Meet with a student adviser and plan for classes or tutoring to prepare for the tests. HiSET is a self-paced option to earning your high school credential. 

HiSET classes are small group or 1:1 tutoring to help you prepare for the test success. Build essential academic skills while learning invaluable test taking tips.

Prepare for your HiSET in as little as 6 weeks. This will require a CASAS assessment to determine place-ment and learning needs. This HiSET Academy is de-signed to closely resemble the official HiSet exam, and contect is 100% aligned. Students are able to work independently learning is self-directed, and lessons/ practice tests are individualized. *Practice Tests *Scoring Please contact our office @207-778-3460 to make an appointment and get started to-wards earning your high school equivilency. *We can say with confidence that if a student uses this pro-gram and goes through the process, they will be able to pass the official HiSET exam.

HiSet is Maine’s general education development (GED) program. If you are an adult without a high school diploma, the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) program could be your route to improved career prospects, a college education and increased earnings potential. Adult diploma programs are central to the mission and tradition of Maine Adult Education. Get your diploma and be one step closer to achieving your life's goals! Our daytime learning center is open only by appointment due to Covid-19 restrictions, but we have an active tutoring program available via Zoom.  Email us or call our office to get started on your journey to a diploma or beyond!

The HiSET is a High School Equivalency test that replaces the GED in the State of Maine and will:

  • Certify a candidate’s attainment of academic knowledge and skills
  • Prepare for and test in five core areas: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies
  • Official HiSET instruction and testing is offered at our satellite locations
  • Rolling admission

HiSET Writing


with Brenda Hio-Hamdan, Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education

HiSet is Maine’s general education development (GED) program. In this 6-week Zoom course, you’ll learn how to write an essay for the HiSET Writing Test.   The class will focus on organizing your ideas and providing supporting details in an argumentative essay. Grammar, punctuation, and writing mechanics will also be covered.  There will be opportunities for revising and editing with other students. Learn how to write your best essay!

Whether preparing for the HiSET exam, earning credits towards an adult education diploma, or working on math skills for career advancement, students will work within an individualized program to improve knowledge of mathematical topics, ranging from basic mathematical literacy to algebra and geometry concepts.

Materials and pace will vary, depending on student needs.

Math Focus

Students will work with a variety of materials to understand a range of mathematical topics.

Students will receive targeted instruction and may work independently or with other students to complete assigned tasks and improve skills.
