HiSET (High School Equivalency Test)
with Spruce Mountain Adult Education
The HiSET consists of five tests: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
Passing all five tests demonstrates the skills and knowledge of a high school graduate, opening doors for work and college.
Meet with a student adviser to plan classes or tutoring to prepare.
HiSET classes offer self-paced learning with small group classes or 1:1 tutoring.
Students will build essential academic skills and learn invaluable test-taking tips for success.
HiSET Exam

The HiSet™ is a series of five subject tests; Science, Social Studies, Reading, Writing, and Math. The HiSet has replaced the GED in Maine. Students are enrolled in HiSET Academy to help them prepare for the exam. Students are expected to attend an in person class at least two hours per week and also complete at least two hours of study online per week. HiSET Academy and the HiSET exam are free for Maine residents. Participants must be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in high school. Please call 207.941.6316 for a registration appointment for either the High School Diploma program or the HiSet.

If you are an adult without a high school diploma, the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) program could be your route to improved career prospects, a college education and increased earnings potential. Adult diploma programs are central to the mission and tradition of Maine Adult Education. Get your diploma and be one step closer to achieving your life's goals! If you are unable to join us during the regular Adult Learning Center hours, we have an active tutoring program available via Zoom and can schedule 1:1 time with the instructor. HiSET Writing
with Brenda Hio-Hamdan, Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education
HiSet is Maine’s general education development (GED) program. In this 6-week Zoom course, you’ll learn how to write an essay for the HiSET Writing Test. The class will focus on organizing your ideas and providing supporting details in an argumentative essay. Grammar, punctuation, and writing mechanics will also be covered. There will be opportunities for revising and editing with other students. Learn how to write your best essay!

This class is specifically designed for individuals seeking to complete their high school credentials.
Whether preparing for the HiSET exam, earning credits towards an adult education diploma, or enhancing math skills for career advancement, students will follow an individualized program covering topics from basic math literacy to algebra and geometry.
Materials and pace will vary based on student needs. Coursework can be completed onsite with direct instruction and independent work, or remotely. Various print materials and online learning resources are available.

Coursework is flexible and can be completed remotely, accommodating individual learning preferences and schedules.
