English Skills and Writing Fundamentals

The course focus is on developing reading and writing skills. You will learn to identify and correct common writing errors, and learn helpful techniques to get your ideas down on paper. We will read short stories, a novel, opinion essays and non-fiction articles. The class will benefit students preparing for the HiSET or college and credit recovery students needing English credits for their high school diploma.
Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-8:30 pm

High School Equivalency (HiSET™) Preparation

This will be a 6 week preparatory class to learn about the new high school equivalency test to be administered in Maine. This test takes the place of the GED test. Class begins with orientation and test overview. Continuation of class includes: pre/post assessment in math and reading and preparation for each subject of the HiSET™test. There will be an official practice test given for each subject and based on those scores, the instructor will recommend when individuals are ready to schedule each of their official exams. Tutoring will be available based on class and student need. Students are welcome to attend the next round of classes for specific subjects as needed. HiSet High School Completion

Scarborough community members who wish to earn an adult high school diploma have two options for completion: HISET, which is the State of Maine High School Equivalency test, or pursuit of an adult high school diploma through our online program (Odysseyware) or through independent study. HiSET has replaced the GED as Maine’s High School Equivalency Assessment. All testing is computer-based. This will mean that appointments for testing MUST BE SCHEDULED in advance of the test date. This is a small, individualized class designed to assist students with completing their high school diploma by concentrating on what the student needs in order to successful complete all five tests. Students have access to HiSET Academy, an online learning platform in addition to the class time. Pre-tests are administered in class to determine readiness for the tests.

HiSET Preparation and Testing

Similar to the GED®, the HiSET® exam measures learning developed through life experiences in areas of Reading, Science, Social Studies, Math and Writing. Preparation classes, predictor tests and exams are free. Must be seventeen or older. Accommodations are available for persons with documented disabilities per Americans with Disabilities Act.
