Fiction Writing for Beginners

$89

with Nan Fitzgerald, Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education

Calendar Apr 24, 2024 at 6 pm, runs for 6 weeks

Fiction is, by definition, the opposite of literal truth – yet one of its most important functions is to convey emotional truths. As they entertain us, stories can also convey complex ideas and emotions, expand our capacity for empathy, and, at their best, transport us to another place entirely. In this class we will use excerpts, handouts, and focused writing exercises to investigate how writers work this magic, employing story elements such as character, plot, point of view, setting, description, and dialogue to impart meaning to their readers. Come ready to write (sharing your work with the group is optional, but encouraged), to learn how to give specific, constructive feedback, to revise your work, and, above all, to try your hand at creating – and populating – new and intriguing worlds out of your own experience and imagination.
